I noticed that there is another version of the Ejercito Argentino, 1950 non-catalog set on the new CD. On post #11 the troops are wearing German style helmets while the new version shows them in what appear to be Spanish (or Swiss?) style helmets. I like the newer version better than the old.

Hiriart informed me that these are indeed Swiss helmets. Apparently, the Argentine Army was replacing their German-style helmets with Swiss versions at about this time. They also said they could make me this set in a Swiss Army variation with the Swiss flag. Since I have already placed my annual Hiriart order, I will order it next year.

I recently asked Hiriart what additional new sets they were working on for release this year. Although I don't have any details, they will include Mexican Air Force and Marines, Guatemalan and Columbian Cavalry, Guatemalan Polytechnique School Cadets, and Venzuelan Hussars. When I get photos, I will post them.

Here is a photo of a new, non-catalog set with a unit that one doesn't see very often; in fact, I have never seen this unit before from any other manufacturer. It is ESCUELA POLITECNIA GUATEMALA CABALLARIA.

Here is a new, non-catalog set with an unusual subject mater. It is the ESCUELA DE CABALLERIA COLUMBIA. Very interesting to those of us who like uncommon subject matter.

Here is another look at set 1335 HEROICO COLEGIO MILITAR MEXICO, but combined with a second, non-catalog set which includes the red colegio flag and a cadet with an eagle mascot. The nine-figure catalog set with an officer, national flag bearer, bugler, and six cadets is shown in post #17.

It could be that catalog set 1335 COLEGIO HEROICO MILITAR, MEXICO has been changed slightly from the one I received on my last order. It now may have an officer, a cadet with an eagle (replacing the bugler), a national flag bearer, and six men. Here is a close-up of the eagle.

Great looking sets! Still new to this hobby and started with matte but the glossy world is calling me and calling hard :)

Great looking sets! Still new to this hobby and started with matte but the glossy world is calling me and calling hard :)

I have both kinds, but there is a special charm in traditional glossy figures that is missing from the military miniature matte figures. Also, the price differental is getting wider and wider.

Here is a better stock photo than the one I had posted before of set 1132 FUERZA AEREA CHILE which is the Chilean Air Force Band. In this photo you can more clearly see the trumpeters banners.

Correction: On the last post, I identified a set as 1275 ACADEMIA MILITARIA "ELOY ALFARO," ECUADOR, but it is actually set 1329 ACADEMIA MILITAR DE GUATEMALA. Here is a stock photo of 1329.

Hiriart makes many sets which were inspired by earlier old Britains sets. The Hiriart sets are superior to the old Britains in their sculpting, painting quality, accuracy, consistency, and attention to detail. Here is an example of Hiriart set 1057 ESCUELA MILITAR, URUGUAY compared to the old Britains version. Note the primative faces on the Britains figures and the lack of detail on their uniforms. The Hiriart figures have the red collars, like the Britains, but also have red piping on the button line and sleeve cuffs which the Britains figures are missing. Also, there is a white detail on the boots not found on the Britains.

Hiriart's catalog set 1287 REGIMIENTO DE INFANTERIA NO. 1, "LOS COLORADOS," BOLIVIA does not normally come with a flag bearer; however, I ordered it for my collection in 2009 and for a couple of other collectors with a flag. Without the flag it is difficult to determine what country these figures represent. The first photo is my actual set while the second is a stock catalog photo. Much better with a flag, don't you think?
