HIRIART Order Arrives! (3 Viewers)

The safest answer to an idiotic statement was YES DRILL SARGENT !!

Ah, yes, it is all coming back to me now. Thanks. Actually, Basic Training wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It wasn't as physically demanding as I feared at the time. The chow was awful, but I did go from weighing 150 pounds to 165 pounds in eight weeks, so it must have been nutritious. I actually liked my Platoon Sergeant, Sgt. Sporleader, who was a Korean War veteran, and a very decent man. I didn't like our Platoon Leader, Lt. Desjardins, who would back you up to a wall and scream in your face. I guess he was trying to make soldiers out of us. So, you are bringing back memories from more than 50 years ago, in 1961, that I had of Fort Ord, California, as a Private (E-1) making $78 a month, while serving in Company C, 11th Battle Group, 3rd Brigade, while still a teenager.

That is the Marine Corps. I nevered apologized in the Army which might be why I spent so much time in the low crawl pit{sm4}

Probably- we don't have a pit, we have a very, VERY steep hill. It was actually the sight of the first modern combat obstacle course, until they built barracks on it. We call it Cardiac Hill{sm4}{sm2}.

Here is another re-sale set that came with the order. It is set 1144 INFANTERIE DE LIGNE, 1916.

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy....

This is another "personality" set that I ordered for re-sale: 1200 THE LIBERATION OF PARIS with DEGAULLE. I really like Hiriart's personality sets and have all of them in my personal collection. There are several other collectors that I order for who also collect them.

Hi Wolfgang,

Yes, this has been a very enjoyable week. I am glad I could share it with you. But it continues! Today and tomorrow, I will be busy preparing for this weekend's West Coaster Show. I am checking into the Irvine (California) Marriott on Friday to set up for room trading that evening and Saturday. What I dread, is all the packing and unpacking involved, over a short three day period. As I am doing it, I keep asking myself if I am crazy. Organize and pack at home, unpack and set up on Friday in my room, pack up again Saturday night, unpack and set up Sunday morning at the display hall, and finally pack up again after the show. As an example, it usually takes me at least four hours to pack up on Saturday night. Clearly, I spending more time packing and unpacking than actual show time. I AM CRAZY!

Randy saw this re-sale set in an earlier post and has ordered it: 1108 LEGION ETRANGERE FRANCAISE, 2ND REGIMENT, SAIDA. It is a beautiful set.

Well, I am a little crazy (maybe obsessive-compulsive), but you are right about this hobby, I hope it will help us all live longer. I am glad you enjoy my threads and please do let me know if you ever do plan to come out to California, I would love to met you and arrange for you to see Ed Ruby's and Bob Walker's collections. Mine, too, but it pails compared to theirs. If you haven't seen it yet, I started a thread in December under Dioramas entited "Bob Walker's 5th Annual Open House" which I believe you will be amazed to see.

The West Coaster is great fun. I've met hundreds of other collectors there (Ed, Bob, etc.) over the years and really look forward to it. I always tell my wife that I sold more toy soldiers at the show than I brought home, but I am not sure if she believes me. However, she really tolerates my hobby. I once said I could either do this or get a mistress. She replied that a mistress would probably cost less.
