HIRIART Variations on a Theme (2 Viewers)

This is an example of where the variation on a theme is a fairly simple and straight forward repaint in different uniforms. The Hiriart catalog set is 1245 DEUTSCHE SUD WEST AFRIKA TRUPPEN where the figures are wearing their gray uniforms. Randy (PolarBear) has requested that the set be painted with the figures in their khaki tropical uniforms based upon the attached historic photo he sent me, plus other photos of what the uniform should look like. My 2012 annual order with Hiriart will include five of these sets including one for Randy, Bob Walker, and me.

Here are some other photos that Randy provided of the khaki uniform from a museum which will help Hiriart with the repaints.

A fairly simple variation is changing the head to include a helmet. The first photo is catalog set 1048 WORLD WAR II DEUTSCHES KRIEGSMARINE in soft naval caps while the second is a non-catalog version wearing helmets. I also had a third version made for me in winter great coats wearing helmets, but I don't have a photo of it.

Hiriart also has another set that is very similar to the last post where the band is wearing the same uniform (except the officers), but with shoes rather than boots: 1298 KAISERLICHEMARINE BAND. I also have this set in my collection.

In another example, where Hiriart has made a catalog set into non-catalog band set is 1047 WORLD WAR II LUFTWAFFE FLAK TROOPS. Notice that rather than marching like the catalog set, the non-catalog band set is standing.

In addition to the non-catalog band set, Hiriart has also made the WWII Luftwaffe catalog set with a Goering personality figure. All personality sets have eight figures rather than the standard nine figures per set. The only photo I have of this variation is attached.

In an earlier post, I had a photo of set 1043 LIEBSTANDARTE S.S. WITH HITLER in a large formation including non-catalog variations with the men at present arms and in motorcycle side cars. Here is the catalog set again for comparison purposes with the present arms version as I ordered it.

I have Hiriart's set 1162 WORLD WAR II BREN CARRIER in my collection. I also had a non-catalog set made for me of World War II British Infantry. I didn't specify how they should look and received this handsome variation which I prefer to the at-sling-arms that might have been made.

Hiriart's standard catalog set 1141 of the 17TH LANCERS, ULUNDI has also been made into non-catalog versions where the figures are standing, wearing the Zulu War uniforms and another version where they are wearing dress uniforms.

Hi Buster,

Yes, it is a neat set. The winter coats with the white web gear make it striking to my mind's eye. I have it on my future "to buy" list. I will order it with two extra men so that I can display it 1 X 3 X 3 X 3.

Hiriart has a set from a war that isn't covered too often. It is catalog set 1198 CACCIATORI d'AFRICA, ADDIS ABABA, 1936. There is also a non-catalog 19 figure band set of this same unit. It could also be very easily made into a Bersaglieri regiment by adding the cock feathers to the tropical helmet or a Black Shirt Legion by painting the shirts and ties black and changing the frontal helmet badge.

Upon further reflection, I am not sure if this a variation of set 1010 ROYAL MARINE LIGHT INFANTRY or of set 1209 ROYAL MARINE ARTILLERY. However, they are marching with their rifles like the set 1209 figures.

Hiriart catalog set 1144 INFANTERIE FRANCAISE, 1916 has also been made into non-catalog sets of DRAGOONS and MOUNTAIN ARTILLERY. Note: I have the Dagoon set with the standard five figures including an officer, bugler, and three men.
