Horse ID and manufacturer (1 Viewer)

I'm delighted to be able to say - I've found my missing Queen - to be able to ride Winston once again.

I couldn't believe my eyes when the pair showed up - days after I completed Winston on e-bay. Better still, nobody else wanted the pair.

So.............my plan is to repair slight damage to both elements of the figure - Adjust the horse slightly and paint it as "Imperial" (another horse the Queen rode later than Winston)- repaint the Queen - and use her interchangeably on either horse.

Here's a pic - as found. jb

All old paint has now been cleaned off. I have replaced a missing pin that once held the Queen in place on the horse's saddle, so she can now remain seated again - but can be lifted off when required to dismount.

I also replaced the riding stick held in her left hand ( cut piece of paper-clip).

I'm thinking of also modelling a hackle ( tuft of feather) for HM's cap, before painting - as many pics show this feature.

This is the same horse casting as Winston - but the part of the tack that goes from the bit to the saddle had been snapped off for this latest one, so I removed what was left by surgery. This horse is to become "Imperial", which was ridden by the Queen after Winston. Imperial was also a Chestnut - but had four distinct long socks to the legs.

Look again at pics for both horses here:

Here's how they look now.

It's really great to see that sculpt again, before you apply the paint. That is a very nicely sculpted horse.

Prost!

Yes Brad - it is very well sculpted. Both by Timpo, of course - and most unlike many of their Cowboy type horses, which are also very nice - but very toylike.

As the Queen is shown riding Imperial with a hackle in her beret - I found in my stash of spare parts - some hackles on a sprue (Dorset Model Soldiers spare parts) - so drilled a hole in HM's beret - and glued a hackle in. She now looks like this - on Imperial ( once it has been painted):

Or maybe you prefer her on Winston? - which shows how interchangeable the figure is.

I have also just realised, that my All Black Britains horse - was meant to be Burmese, which came later still as one of H M's horses used at the Trooping of the Colour. After using Burmese for 19 years - who was obviously a great favourite, the Queen then decided that her riding days were over - and began using The Ivory Phaeton ( which I also have as a model).

Come to think of it - I have nearly all of her mounts now. The one missing is a Pale Grey, (again a Police trained mount) named "Doctor", which was ridden by the Queen at the Trooping ceremoney in 1963.

I must keep my eyes peeled for yet another one - and then I think that I will have a nice little cameo collection of all horses used to convey the Queen to that wonderful spectacle - The Trooping of the Colour.

I'll have to get some more Guards done!:D jb

Great job !!!! If you find another horse you could paint it white as she was donated one by The RCMP.

She rode the Pale Grey horse named "Doctor" in the 1963 Trooping. I'll keep looking for a suitable candidate Scott!.:salute::

As usual, this story has got me more and more interested - so I started reading a bit more.

Before Princess Elizabeth became Queen, upon the untimely death of her Father - the Queen rode a horse named "Tommy" - at the Trooping, though she was of course not Regent at that time. And as well as riding "Doctor", as discussed - she also rode a horse named "Neill" on one occasion.

So......... there are two more versions to paint up when she was Queen to complete the cameo - and three if you include "Tommy", when she was a Princess ( though she was not in Guards dress on that occasion ).

I'll have to keep looking for some more reasonable figures to adapt .............................:D jb

Well, here's where I'm at with this little collection, so far.

I began with buying a relatively shabby Britains figure of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth riding Burmese, who was a black horse donated to the Queen by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. I bought this figure some time ago. This was actually the last of the horses that The Queen rode at the Trooping of the Colour. I based it recently, and gave the figure a touch up.

I next found "Winston", (from Timpo, c.1950), who came in a job-lot - and I originally was unsure of the manufacturer - which began this thread. Winston was her father's horse originally - and the Queen rode him in Coronation year, 1953 - so at the opposite end of her years of riding side-saddle at the Trooping. This figure required a new rear left leg to stand up - so I repaired that and generally cleaned up the figure. When found - the horse had no rider - so I set up a search on e-bay - and soon found another.

I found a very shabby complete figure of the Queen and horse, again by Timpo on e-bay. The figure again had broken bits - such as the rein from snaffle to saddle, but I repaired or removed any offending parts, and converted the horse to look like "Imperial", whom the Queen rode during the sixties. Another chestnut horse - and very similar to Winston, but note the distinctive long white socks on all four legs. I found a gorgeous picture painted by Terence Cuneo, who was commissioned to paint a picture of HM riding the mount in the gardens of Buckingham Palace - which showed the horse off to perfection - so I used this as a painting guide.

Here's a few pics below. As you can see, the Queen is interchangeable between Winston and Imperial, ( which is the same Timpo casting) - whereas the Britains figure of Burmese, is also demountable - but won't fit onto the other two horses. jb
