Watched the long version of Dawn of the Dead (1978) last night. Got me thinking: Would it have been as great (IMO) with another musical score? Or "Jaws", "Star Wars", etc etc?

I dont know. I wonder how much the score matters? Seems to me like it does (can't imagine "Zulu" without that music) but I dont know.

Yeah I have to be honest with you, Dawn of the Dead having a good score is WAY down the priority list for me, a movie about zombies.

It actually was not a movie about zombies, more about American culture and Americans in general.

If you are talking horror flicks, then the music in the John Carpenter movies was always great. My favorite is the remake of "The Thing." Great movie and great score. Kubrick's "The Shining" had a pretty good one as well. The opening scene with the car winding up the mountain road is a classic.

I also liked the score from The Thing, as well as Alien/Aliens and Predator, and many other movies across all the genres. I would say that The Score is so important it can make or break a movie. Sometimes they get carried away with sound effects such as swishing noises when a sword is used, but it does add to the enjoyment, which is why they add them of course.

Some of the most iconic scores are:

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (Ennio Morricone)

The Magnificent Seven (Elmer Bernstein)

The Third Man Theme (Harry Lime Theme)

Dr Zhivago (Lara's Theme)

As said, the score can make or break a movie. It is a major component of most films. Who can imagine 'Jaws' or 'How the West Was Won' or 'Where Eagles Dare' without their signature themes? -- Al

The score was downright scary. I watched the Italian version, edited by Argento (no slouch). Different score. It wasnt the same.

I wonder if I saw a otherwise bad movie, but the score made the difference unconsciously. Jaws, Good, Bad and the Ugly, etc, I would probably still love without the score. I think? (Jaws is my all time favorite movie. If you go offshore fishing withe me, you will here nonstop Quint lines: "I think she's gone under the boat!" "You Lose one, you rig one!" etc. When we hook a shark, it gets worse. Always wanted a fire on board, so I could act nonplussed, and say "Put out the fire, Chief!". Even take an M-1 on board, for added drama :) )

"Psycho". Now THAT was a score! Gordon used the score for "Re-Animator", and it worked there too!
