Bernard,

I'm not sure the answers match the question.

I'm thinking the choices should be:

I collect Old Britains and I have less than five sets
I collect Old Britains and I have more than five sets
I don't collect Old Britains because I find them to be expensive
I don't collect Old Britains because they don't display well
I don't collect Old Britains for other reasons

Let me know if that's what you had in mind and I can edit the poll.

Before we drift off into a discussion of farm or circus figures, have we decided what, if anything, the final poll will look like? It seems to me ( which is not necessarily determiantive) like we're drifting away from the original subject matter.

I would like to vote again in the new re-vamped poll(s). Perhaps there should be a general one, as outlined below, and then more detailed ones on boxed sets, periods, military/civilian etc?

I agree - why don't you start a new poll?

Dick

Hi Guys,

I will happily help with a poll if you want. Just send me a PM or email with the poll questions you want asked and I will set it up

All the best

Dave

Dave, how about a combination of posts 9 & 10 from Dick and Ken?

I'd be interested in which regiments or sets (not by #) people collect and what their favorite figures are (mine is the Coldstream Guard at attention). I don't collect by Britains set-I consider my regiment complete if I've got nine or twelve as I think they display better that way (not that I ever show them to anyone-it's just more symetrical). I like the postwar era better as that's when I grew up (kinda). - Emily

Yo Trooperess Emily, in a nut shell as you can see by the poll not many. Dickbuttons was the main man in the Old Britains, but Dick is on extended leave at the moment, but like all good Troopers will be back. I collected the Cavalry sets, I could afford post war, but the pre war were way out of my reach some of them fetching £600-1000. My view if you are going to collect Old Britains they have to be in sets and boxed if your serious about them as I am, but if its just a hobby thing and you collect as you say nine of a regiment, thats OK if you enjoy it.

Unusual name Whistlinghen, I have never heard a hen whistle lol.
A farmer by me told me he had bred hens with four legs, I said are you kidding me, he said no, so I said what do they taste like then. He said dont know, haven't been able to catch one yet:p.

As I've stated before, I kinda make up my own idea of what the sets should have looked like, and then glue them on boards so the cat doesn't kill them. I also repair and repaint (with the exception of a few that I managed to buy in good condition), which also kills the collectability, but fits with my family motto of "Buy high, sell low". I've not caught the box collecting fever, although I do "collect" painted metal tins-they're no good to keep the lead in though. My friends would consider me "serious" in terms of a sub-clinical mental disorder, but I get your distinction. I loved the joke-I'll use it at work (I work with seniors, keeping them busy). The handle comes from an old saying, "A card playin' woman and a whistlin' hen, both will come to some bad end", and another interest, playing the Irish tin whistle (more unusual in Seattle than in Ireland, where I understand each baby is issued one instead of a binky). Cheers, Emily
P.S. Collecting tin whistles is yet another obsessive hobby one can fall victim to. Check out chiffandfipple.com for a hilarious look into "whistle aquisition disorder".

Hi Guys been reading this thread with much interest, I started in the hobby with collecting old Britains in sets when I could afford them, or picking up broken Britains and restoring them to their original finish and sometimes into sets Britains did not make. I have to say I do not collect many these days but like to hang on to the ones I have in my collection. Heres some pics from my album with cavalry especially for you Bernard

Regards John

John,
Thanks for thinking of my precious Steadfast stable muckers and including them in this wonderful display!

It would be interesting to see who the people are that voted in this poll as there doesn't seem to be many people participating with their collections as this poll would indicate.

Hi Guys,

Wow those photos are just amazing! I am sorry it took me so long to reply but I have been out wandering in the highlands of Colorado and Montana and have not had any computer access for 2 weeks.

I have several groupings of old Britains and have a photo I will post to show them mixed with some modern figures for a fun little display I had on my desk top. I have a lot of other sets thta I have put together in recent years too include some nice Lancers and am working on the Moutain Artillery set. Love the use of the modern soldiers with the Vintage and hope to see more folks doing that too.

Great display. Makes me want to find buildings for a parade.

Dave: I collected old Britains for about 30 years. I have a lot of new Britains but stopped when the owners kept changing and there did not seem to be the uniformity of painting, size and overall quality. It looks better now. If anyone is interested, there are a couple of shelves of old Britains on the links below and in my albums. I should have the rest posted in a couple of weeks.

Hi Tommy just visited your collection or should I say toy soldier museum. You have an amazing collection beautifully displayed, thank you for showing it, I will definitely visit it again for another fantastic tour.:eek:

Regards John

Hi Tommy,

Your photos of your collection are just amazing! I really enjoyed seeing all the eras covered and of course the wonderful Britains sets. I am really envious of the Musical Ride you have I would love to own one of them. Some day I hope.

Thanks for posting the link.

Dave

What a fantastic collection of figures and gun boats. I could spend hours looking at your well detailed photos. Thanks for posting these displays. I even saw a T Patch from the Texas wwll 36th Division where my Godfather served all through WWll. Thanks John

Thanks John. You may want to contact Mrs. Katie Sinclair, 300 Kelli Circle, Sulphur Springs, Texas 75482. Her late husband was a T Patcher and she has an extensive display of items about the 36th division at the Sulphur Springs Library. They placed a nice monument on our square in memory of the division members. I know her personally and mention my name to her. It would thrill her to hear from you. Best regards,
