Hi,

Have you an idea of how many collectors in Europe? and in the USA ?
When will we see the first King & Country by auction?

Thx,

En tout cas, il en a plus que jamais des britanniques et des australiens...{sm3}

To be frank, I think the collector population for toy soldiers in this world is rather small. This is a niche market and I think there are a few criterias to meet before you becomes one with this hobby^&grin.

Let me start the ball rolling.

Number 1: you must love history first and foremost.( start young)

Number 2: you must be willing to dish out hard cash for this hobby and quite a bit of it. Some call it mad I know.

Number 3: you must be able to appreciate the quality and time spend on the figurines and you have an electrifying feeling every time you hold one of those "toy soldier" in your hands. {sm4}

This is a question that never really have an answer. For every one of us who posts on this forum there are a dozen "lurkers" who read but will never post. Then there are MANY collectors out there who buy a few or a lot, but prefer (for any number of reasons) to keep it quiet. I have seen this in many hobbies - model building, model trains, etc. For instance there are a lot of guys who build model railroads who will rarely show up as a "regular" at the local hobby store and who will never join a club. Nobody knows about them outside their family until the pass away and the family is trying to clean out their stuff. The same situation exists in toy soldiers. We have people who MUST have one of everything, then there are guys who have one or two to decorate their den or desk top. This little niche market still manages to support several manufacturers and a number of fine dealers, so there may be more than we realize.

Have been working on this question for years and I have an answer. There are 173,121 collectors on a world wide basis, give or take a dozen. This figure is incomplete because no one in Carjackistan returned my phone calls.:wink2: -- Al

N°4 you have to be a good negociator and persuader to succeed to explain every month to your wife why you spend such a lot of money on figurines !!!!!!!

The most puzzling about this question is where would one go to obtain this information ^&confuse Nearly impossible to get an accurate count . If one were to guess
how many U.S. collectors there are,what tool would be used to gauge numbers ? This forum could be used as a number for members, but again the info would be very
scattered.

Yeah, thats the puzzler!!!! this is like one of those questions that we used to get in philosophy... if a tree falls in a wood and nobody is there does it make a sound? and many more that are easier than this

I do not have any real good data either, but for what it is worth I know that Toy Soldier & Model Figure magazine has at least a 20,000+ cirulation. Of course many collectors do not get this somewhat expensive magazine although you can now get the Internet version at a relatively low price. If one could get data on the output of sets by K&C, W. Britain and others it may help give you some idea on how many active collectors there are. I would guess there may be anywhere from a 100,000 to 1,000,000 more or less active toy soldier colletcors in the world.

It would be fascinating to see how many collectors / country and also to see what country collected what figures.

I started a thread a good while ago on “Why do we collect the sets that we do”? It would be quite interesting to see the number of US Civil War collectors in Europe; the number of Zulu wars in Singapore or the number of AWI sets in Australia?

I would think that Andy and staff at K&C; John and staff at JJD; the First Legion folks and such have a real good idea, simply based on the volumes shipped to the country and/or to dealers.

I doubt that they would ever share that information though.

You would have to be a very committed collector to cope with the absence of both a local store or collecting community. Though a forum permits contact with a much broader range of people, it must be a lonely road collecting AWI in Perth or Zulus in South America.
