Has anyone out there had a glass shelf inside a display cabinet break due to the weight of the figures being displayed?
I have been re-arranging displays recently, most 20 years or older and as I'm removng the figures on plastic trays, I'm very surprused how heavy the figures are. I have not weighed them, but they are, as a group, easily around 10lb!
The glass looks to be about 1/4 inch glass. Even in the cases that I have had the same figures displayed for two decades, I'm wondering if I have a dissaster waiting to happen.
would like to hear the comments of other collectors.
Thanks in advance.

The glass in IKEA Fabrikor will take up to 22.5 lbs. that would require lots of horsemen.

I have IKEA BILLY bookcases for my toy soldier display and their information states that a maximum weight per shelf is 10kg.

The size of the glass shelves are 76 cm x 26cm for these cabinets.

Therefore I weigh some figures, and determine how many I can put there ...BUT I'm sure I put more on the shelf because when I shifted them recently, I noticed some shelves had a slight bow so had bent over time !!!!!

Hope that helps ???

Thx guys! 22 pounds! wow!
That is very helpful. Of course my glass is not from IKEA, but I will actually try to weigh them before putting them back on the shelf.
I do have some professional display cabinets from Waddell (bought them in the late 90's from The Toy Soldier (now Museum)) and then when I made an expansion at home in 2001, I had some display cabinets made locally, using the Waddel pieces as a guide.
So that glass on those local display cabinets, I would call "regular glass" and might not be as strong as whatever IKEA or Waddell for that matter use.
After I weigh some of the groups I will have a better idea.
The comment of the glass bowing because of the weight made me cringe! Wow!
Much appreciate the responses... Que siga la fiesta! :smile2:

yes I had one of mine smash in my 1.2m wide display case! wasnt bending much then boom and it simply shattered. what a mess.

so be careful and stick to the weights and dont put heavy stuff in the middle of the shelf. I suspect the glass in mine wasnt perfect so check for any inperfections - if you see any put that shelf on the bottom!

I would call any window glass installers near you and ask them. They can probably provide you the technical info you're looking for, and probably even provide more shelving.

Prost!

Thanks for the Thread and the responses! Good question & answers.
Truth be told, we're a bit worried ourselves. Gotta bring out a scale.
Best Wishes!

Using the calculator I get anout 15 pounds. After weighing the figures, I got a total of abput 24lb !
Decisions, decisions...
Although the calculator talks about supports so it might aplly to shelves held by brackets...

Are the brackets stong enough? How strong?
We just keep the weight away from the center and hope for the best.
