Hudson & Allen Backdrops (1 Viewer)

My two are on the way, so I will than explore how to mount them with a backing. Robin.

Looks brilliant Ken, the backdrop even has a 3D quality to it.

Will you be doing other backdrops to complement the other different periods of toy soldiers you make?

I am working on a new one for American Civil War at the moment and we will offer it when it is finished.
It will be useful for slightly earlier periods in North America too.
They take some time to do between sculpting and writing for The Standard (and other paperwork!) so please be patient.
All the body,
Ken

Here is the woodland backdrop used with the trees I built and featuring a mixture of previously released Clash of Empires figures and four new Highlanders that will appear in the spring supplement.
All the best,
Ken

I really need a good scenic background for my Normandy diorama, I'm tired of having white walls in my background photos, do you all think the Woodland scene would work ok with a Normandy hedgerow diorama??

Try a backdrop with fields on it. That I am aware of, there are/were no dense forests in Normandy, just the famous bocage.....
Cheers

I would not use our woodland backdrop for NW Europe, however we shoiuld have at least one that will work for you later this year. As you know we have a nice selection of french buildings in our range and there are more new ones in the works, so a backdrop is needed to use with them.

Thanks for thinking about us...hopefully we will see some of you in Texas this year too.
All the best,
Ken

This is an example of a simple backdrop I did a few years ago to use with our scenics.

Here is an example of a large one I did for the AZW as I was working on it. Normally I paint on hardboard, but this one was long enough that I painted it on stretched canvas.

I have just received two backdrops from Hudson & Allen; one is a Winter scene and one Woodlands. They were both made from originals handpainted by Ken Osen and measure 54 x 18. They are tremendous!

I just put in a order for the Winter backdrop as I think it will work perfectly for my winter diorama, I refuse to take another photo with a bare wall, window blinds in the background!!!

I ordered the woodlands but haven't received it yet.

I talked with a rep yesterday who thinks the back orders for the prints should arrive next week at their place so hoping it shouldn't be long in receiving the orders.

I am eager to see these in dioramas. I have the woodland one and the scale of the trees compared to figures makes it look like a redwood forest. I am trying to figure out how in Ken's diorama it doesn't look this way. I was using JG tress and maybe they are just too small in the foreground

I'm hoping that Treefrog gets mine early next week and ships by later next weekend, I will put it to use in my winter diorama as the 54 inches in lenghth is almost what I need to use as a full backdrop, actually it will be a bit short but I can work around that, I'll post some photos as soon as I can get a free moment.

That's the issue I'm having with the Woodlands. It looks too big for the figures. Perhaps Ken can comment.

18th-century old growth trees were quite large. A few model trees and structures in the foreground will probably improve the scale of the background.

Here are a few photos I took using the winter background, a JG mat and some K & C figures.

The first picture is an actual photo whereas with the second photo I used the chrome option and on the last two experimented with the light and exposure options.

You'll notice in the first photo that the background and mat are slightly different colors. If you are a perfectionist that may throw you off. In addition, there was a gap between the bottom of the background and the mat so I added some H & A snow that I purchased.

Comments are, of course, welcome but this was meant primarily to show how the background worked with some figures. I'm sure an experienced dioramist would do a much better job.

Fairly confident with the snow background as it looks to fit in well with these scenes. Still a little worried about the tree one as the trees appear very tall, requiring the figures to be positioned way forward to help with the scale aspect. Will not know until I get down to it and set up a display, some time off yet. Robin.
