I just read this - Military billing Soldiers? (1 Viewer)

Unfortunately, that is nothing new- they tried to get my old man for several thousand dollars or something two years AFTER he retired!! It would have dropped his Honorable discharge to a General Discharge and had a very negative impact on his retirement bennies.

When I got out, I was hit up for loosing some tools- to the tune of about $75- I went to walmart and bought the same things for roughly $30. When you get a "Statement of charges", it is done at the government price!!

I read that article and Chris' comment and I just find this incredible. It's obviously nothing new but it's new to me and I'm outstounded.

Does anyone know if other countries follow this assinine practice?

Well, you need to look at it fromt he Army's perspective as well. Sometimes a regimented and structured codification of rules makes things easy for individuals operating within that environment to make decisions- for example- who do I contact if I have a marital problem, what standards govern how I should wear my uniform?, you should be able to relate to this being a lawyer Brad- there are probably times within various parts of the Uniform Code, Statutes, etc where you want to bang your head off the wall- the military is no different- accountability from munitions to troops to ammo to the last rivets on the side of 578 tracked wrecker are accounted for. Tools and equipment are some of the big items that fall in this practice.

The fact that this came up in wartime is a bit overdone and somebody needs to get that in check but yeah, it's accountability and the military loves that stuff!!

I am not sure if other countries go to the extremes we do but I am sure they account for some sensitive items like protective masks, ammo, troops, tanks, etc.

I have spoken to some high level logistics officers and have been informed that the miltiary is even considering assigning web http addresses to every bullet!! How's that for accountability!!!!

If you see a bullet with my name on it would you throw it away for me :)

I was talking to a Civil War collector some years back. He had found an article of clothing or equipment that belonged to a Civil War soldier that had been marked with the soldiers name. He wanted to learn more about the individual so he started searching the archives for other information about him. He just so happened to find a receipt where the individual was billed for losing the item in question. It was just a story I was told so I can't vouch for it 100%. Interesting though isn't it.

Thanks
Ronnie
