I need some help! (1 Viewer)

Troops of Time is a very special place for me and Tim Tyler a very close friend. I was Tim's first out of Jacksonville customer back in 2001 - at the time I lived in Tallahassee - Florida's State Capitol (for you yankees). It is one of the best Toy Soldier Shops I have ever been in - A true southern style.

Tim Tyler is one of the best people in this business - he makes this hobby fun and enjoyable. :)

I too have never been in a toy soldier store. I can only imagine what my reaction would be once such wonderful toys surround me. All of my senses would overload and burn out my brain with excess adrenaline, I would have a stroke because I would shake so much with excitement that a blood clot would break loose and travel from some remote part of my body to my pea brain, and I would also have a heart attack due to over stimulation. Ah yes, paramedics and toy soldiers, what a combination for life. ;)
Thanks Michael, you've really put my 'problem' into perspective. I was only worried about spending too much, now I'm concerned I may not even make it out of the shop alive.

Adrian

PS. Full report on my experience when/if I get back.

Goodluck mate with your shopping.I live in Brisbane and there is a great shop here that would love to take your hard earned cash.It has a good range of things and the owner is ok too.Be very careful because you could spend far more than wife will like.We are not as lucky in oz with the amount of shops that sell the great things you see on treefrog but the Military workshop in Brisbane may be able to help you out.Cheers Chris.
Hi Chris,

Coincidentally it's The Military Workshop I'll be visiting. Anticipation building...must maintain self control....

Go nuts mate! If you don't get to go the shop too often have fun and worry about the bill afterwards;).Hope my wife doesn't read this:eek:

Adrian,

Whilst in the store. Look for the items you can not find on line. Not all the dealers have everything listed all the time. There may be antique toys or retired items sitting on a shelf some where. Take your time going through the shop. Remember to breath deeply and check your pulse occasionnally. Good luck.

One time I was in troops of time and the owner just pulled out a bunch of retired king and country civil war items including very hard to find peices like jackson. I know of dealers who take items off their website but leave them in the shop to sell to a faithfull customer or make some money selling them for inflated prices.

Hi Adrian

Like you, I long for a shop based supplier of quality toy soldiers near to where I live. Even in the UK there aren't that many, and sadly none at all in Birmingham apart from a bookstore and model shop which sells selected K+C sets.

I also share your reservations about visiting such a paradise. The only advice I can give is try very hard to limit what you want to collect and then make sure you don't buy anything outside of that - takes an iron will, I know. I don't visit the stores in London for that very reason, and so far I've managed to grit my teeth and stick to what I set out to collect, without veering off the straight and narrow so to speak - still, there's time yet - I've only been collecting for a year or two - :D

Richard, i don't know if you get down to London much but there are two excellant shops for K&C.(and other mfrs)The Guards musem shop just up from Buckingham palace is superb. The prices are a little high but its well worth seeing..They often have stunning Rorkes Drift/Waterloo scenes. Also back across Greeen park and down from the Ritz there is Tradition of London.A great little shop packed with stuff.Whenever i go there there are always Blokes looking throught the window afraid to go in!,like Victorian street urchins at xmas!!

Hi Rob

BTW my 'real' name is Dave - I know, another one - :) RS is my reenacting/airsofting personna - hence the avatar - ;)

I've been to both of the stores you mention, as well as The Armoury of St. James and Under Two Flags before it shut. They're all very lovely - my personal favourite being the Armoury - and great to look round. Hamleys also stock an excellent selection of K+C, and Britains, a lot of it quite nicely displayed, but to be honest I'm buying my 'little soldiers' from America at the moment, for reasons you can no doubt guess - ;)

:) Well then welcome Dave!,nice to have you on board. Will you be going to the London show on the 30th?.Well worth checking out even if your just browsing around and not buying. So are you buying most stuff from treefrog then?.

Rob

Hmmmmm.....actually, no, not at the moment - but I'm perfectly prepared to review their prices - ;)

Currently buying from Sierra Toy Soldier in sunny CA - :)

It is truly a wonderful shop. It's the place that inspired me to be more serious in my Toy Soldier Collecting.
This was some years ago. I was lucky in catch the Guard practicing in full dress for upcoming parade. Band, Queen's Guards, horses and the works.
No crowd just me and few other people. Shot 5 rolls of film. It was a great day for me.:):)

Chuck,

I also have enjoyed both the guards putting on one of the greatest shows on earth, as well as the Guards Museum Toy Soldier Shop, and agree with you on both. One of these days I have to get back to London . . .

Without wishing to sound too much like an echo, 'me too' - seeing the guards on the parade ground was lovely. When I went it was a lovely sunny day - I felt sorry for them in a way - they must have been hot in their busbys - :) Don't know whether you visited St James Park while you were there, but if you walk through the park you can feed the squirrels - they come right up to you and look up at you, begging for nuts - :)

I like visiting London, but wouldn't want to live there. I keep saying to myself, and anyone else who will listen, 'one day, I must go to New York' - I'd love to go - maybe some time after the baby's born we'll all get around to it - :D

If you ever come to New York, let me know. We can definitely have some good Toy Soldier times with the local collecting community.
