As I was buying vikings I have accumulated some doubles that I will be listing for sale or trade. I've noticed that JJD doesn't stamp any identification on the piece itself. So once it leaves the box good luck on getting that piece back to its original box when you have a lot of pieces collected. I have also noticed it's difficult to find a photo of the piece once it's been retired and sold out. How do you handle this in your collection.

Long ago purchased a paint pen which I use to mark the bottom of the figure's base with the model number. It has eliminated the problem of what figure goes in what box. -- Al

Al...

I have never used a paint pen...

is it permanent or can you rub it off if you want?

what type do you use?

Mike, at one time I was using an automobile touch-up pen in silver, very effective but slow drying. You could wipe it off until it dried. When that ran out, I just switched to Sharpie brand markers in silver, which dry almost immediately. I suppose a white paint touch-up pen would be just as effective as silver. Silver and white are very effective contrast to the black bottom of the JJD (and other makes) figures. I have always used the smallest tip pens I could find because lack of space on the figure bottoms makes wide letter strokes illegible. -- Al

For my T Gunn and K & C i use old fashioned sticky labels and handwrite the number on the bottom, for the JJD [as there is a sticker already on the bottom] I went double geeky and on the excel sheet i have marked off which figures i have i have created a number of excel fields, titled
Weapon
Weapon position
Shield shape
Shield design
Shield colour
Clothing colours.

I would never use a pen because on the assumption that you can’t remove it, you may decrease its resale value. Instead, I place a little sticker on the underside of the base indicating the model number.

I don't like the idea of a permanent hand written code on the bottom of the base either...
as I also feel it detracts from the value...

but I have had no luck with removing stickers that have been on the base for several years without damaging the painted bottom...

I really do wish all manufacturers would stamp the bottom of the base with the code...

Many years ago I created picture files of every figure I collected. Each file is identified by manufacturer and the specific range, for example: JJD - Age of Arthur. Besides the picture of the figure the file also includes the catalog number of the figure as well as the price I paid for it. Glad I did. The files have been very useful at times.

I have a spreadsheet with all of the pertinent information, but am lacking your idea of a photo with each.

Great idea Mike...
but it's way too late for me to start that...
but when I need to identify a figure...
I'll just call you...^&grin

Always more than willing to help. Just remember my files are only helpful for just those figure ranges I have collected.

Someday.....I've been working on it for years.....but plan on a full product listing with photos in our "Catalogs & Archives" section. Just a bit too much to do at times and I never seem to get it completed! And the thought of updating it each month has been a process to figure out as well (for easiest implementation).

But these Avery Labels you can run thru your printer and remove without taking off paint! We use them for shows and never have a problem, even if they are taken off later.
For those of you tech-savvy, you can create an excel sheet to upload to fill in the fields and batch print. Rather handy!

Thanks for the good tip.
Maybe you can do some kind of "crowd funding" for pictures.
For example, I have made photos for almost all my figures or downloaded them + photographed the figures in the box, so I then know how to get them back into the box properly.
Especially with airplane models that can be a bit difficult after a long time.
