Idiotic Military inventions (1 Viewer)

Carlos- thanks for posting those vids, they are funny to say the least

Regarding the Athens cannon- rather than pulling around a 7lb, 2 barrell gun, why not just use a 14 pounder or something? I don't know Trooper, there are a lot of issues with this which would lead me to dismiss it as a formidable weapon.

If both barrels were loaded with double canister and fired simultaneously and I was in front of it I would classify it as formidable in very short order! Trooper

True, very true my friend- hard to argue with that!!

How about the coal fired submarines produced about the time of WW1? Had to lower the funnel before crash diving! Believe they were designated as K craft. Trooper

Any views on the Bangalore Torpedo ?

This does not quite fit the title of the thread as it was used in WWI, WWII and as recently in A-Stan to clear wire obstacles.

Cheers, Raymond.:)

Well...yes. Until the second or third advancing rank beats the chicken soup out of the gunners.
One could have a battery of the double barreled guns supporting each other. They would be better in fortifications then on field carriages.

Of course these guns only work in defense. A "Napoleon" barrel or any barrel capable or taking shell, solid and canister, AND already available North and South makes the Athens gun unnecessary.

The film The Big Red One had improper deployment of the weapon with soldiers sacrificing themselves to advance the sections. The idea of adding a section, pushing it forward from cover and repeating sounds good.
