I have been fortunate in finding several Illustrated London News, along with a Graphic, bound volumes that cover many of the Colonial Wars I am interested in. As many of you know the ILN published large fold out picture dioramas that depicted the battles that were reported in that particular issue. Many of these foldouts are becoming hard and expensive to find, here are some that I have in my collection.

Starting with..

THE GRAPHIC - MARCH 19th 1881

THE ATTACK ON LAING'S NEK - FIRST ANGLO BOER WAR also known as THE REVOLT IN THE TRANSVAAL

ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS - APRIL 12th 1884

THE WAR IN THE SOUDAN - BATTLE OF TAMASI - GALLANT RE-CAPTURE OF THE GUNS

Note the ILN spelt TAMAI as TAMASI

ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS - MARCH 7th 1885

THE WAR IN THE SOUDAN - THE BATTLE OF ABOU KRU or GUBAT - JANUARY 19th 1885

Martyn: Great collection and thanks for posting. Did someone publish a book with color plates of those battles like Mempes did for the Durbar? That would be great to have.

Many thanks Tommy :salute::. I don't know of any book published with colour plates of these battles but it would go straight on my list.

I do know of two pictures published by the ILN, one in 1884 and one in 1885. I have the 1885 one...

MARCH 12TH 1885 - TO THE RESCUE

I managed to find two copies of this picture, one in my bound volume and one in a single copy of the March 12th issue.

The 1884 picture is titled "BLUE JACKETS TO THE FRONT"

Not a foldout this time...but a great ad for BEECHAM'S PILLS using a member of the Naval Brigade.

This ad is in the November 5th 1898 issue of the ILN

The ad must have worked - I used to buy those for my dad - and he was in the Navy! He looked like this!

Here is another ad, this time for BARNUM and BAILEY who were putting on a Show over the 1898 Christmas in London. One of the main features of the Show was a re-enactment of the US Navy's victory over the Spanish fleet at Santiago during the Spanish American War. The water tank that was used for the Show was 375 feet long by 40 feet wide, now that must have been something to see.

Martyn,
A very nice addition to your collection. Sometimes the adds are a better read than the articles.
