For any of my friends from across the sea planning a visit to the Imperial War Museum in the next twelve months thought I'd just flag up that it will now be shut from January 2013 until the following July for huge refurbishment and rebuilding of the WW1 Galleries in time for the 100th anniversay in 2014. Additionally from this late summer/autumn there will be disruption and areas hoarded off as work begins on moving out the large exhibits for duration of building work. I know many of you love the museum and just thought I'd mention it so it might not spoil a visit you may have planned.

I think anyone heading to Europe in the next couple of years and wanting to see a specific museum should do their pre-planning becaue I know many are gettng ready for the centenary of WW1 and revamping the exhibition space.

The other one I have heard of is "In Flanders Fields' museum located in the Cloth Hall in Ypers, and a new museum of WW1 being build east of Paris.

Also check on opening days and times, as it would be sad to get there and find its the closed day, and you have a train to catch the next.

So if you are like me and travelling across the globe to see a museum do your homework, and the internet has revolutionised that, so you are not dissapointed.

Rob,

Do you truly mean the whole museum will be shut? {eek3}

Brad, yep totally shut for six months. They are not happy about it but there is nothing else they can do, too dangerous to allow public in there whilst the building is going on. Its going to be considerably different and bigger and better when done though.

Will they send part of the collection out to regional museums or does it all go into storage?

Well, it's good that you will be back. But if they change the layout, won't you have to be reprogramed? ^&grin
