Importance Of Boxes (1 Viewer)

Yo Troopers, I know we have discussed this before somewhere. But thinking back some of the forum members were saying they throw all the Toy Soldier boxes out. Just been looking at the ebay US site, there is a guy selling quite a few Old Britains boxes, bids so far vary from $50.00 to $150.00, so when you think about throwing boxes out again this is a point to keep in mind. OK so they are Old Britains, but one day the will be Old K&C etc. So you are just chucking good money in the bin.

thanks for the news about the boxes, I was given a load of Britains, K&C and Conte boxes a few years back that originally contained American Civil War figures by a collector here in Perth. I told him that they were a valuable asset, and that his figures were thus de-valued, but he just said "I don't want to sell my soldiers, I just want to enjoy them, and I have no space... do you want the boxes? If you don't, I'll thow them in the re-cycle bin"

Natuarlly I accepted his offer. Maybe I should advertise them?

Yo John, I could do with a 5 Cavalry Tie Card for an Old Britains set, do have one but its the wrong size not wide enough, didn't realise till lately they made two size boxes for the Cavalry sets. One 3 1/2" wide and one 4" wide. Both were the same length.

Of course, you are correct that the boxes are a valuable asset and you need to save them. The only problem is that over a lifetime of collecting these things can take up a lot of space. Between the figures and their containers, I need a warehouse to store them all!

Funny thing as I was telling my wife about those auctions as well over the weekend. I told her I should round up all my boxes and try to hock them on EBay and see what happens. She said "You will do no such thing!! When you enter the Church Triumphant, I want to get as much out of those things as I can!!!" Can you believe the nerve!!

It's funny as I would never imagine that there is such value to boxes but I guess there is. Interesting but I have been observing auctions where guys will sell a retired set that would normally fetch $150 or so. If they do not have the boxes, the sets usually sell for $25- $50 less. Interesting but true. That is for infantry sets- I have seen the vehicles go for far less.

I still think the nicest boxes are the vintage Britains though Ken at East of India elevated boxes to an art form with his Usegi Kenshin vignette back in 2001. The box was made of Pinewood- it was a beautiful set.

Yes, I concur. The boxes are space occupying and storage becomes a nagging issue.

That said, a retired set (which is hard to find) just does not seem complete without the original box including the foam inserts.

However, that is the view of a fastidious collector which I confess to be.

1.) If you have the space to display tables for your collection- build shelves underneath the tables and then put a runner around the table to block them out.

2.) Store them underneath your bed (or somewhere else).

3.) Store them in the attic.

4.) Ship them off to a loved one who perhaps has a bigger house than you who will not throw them away.

Foam deteriorates eventually. you might want to keep these separate from your figures to prevent any chemical reaction with the paint.

You could pick up a roll or box of delicate wipes (KimWipes) that are non-acidic. We use them at work for cleaning delicate lenses and video/fiber equipment. Wrap each figure in one then place the figure in the foam so the two are separated. That's what I do with my precious Trophy guys
