Ok with the 70's cop show Hawaii 5 -0 being remade, heres a question.Who could they get for a remake of Columbo!.Possibly the most popular classic seventies detective show Peter Falks performance is a joy to watch, could anyone reprise this role?.When you think that so many shows of its time were 'whodunnits' Columbo was the first of the 'How'd he catch them' type show.I know its dated now and been on a million times, but I still love that show.(and have all the boxsets!)

I think they were going to remake Colombo this year but it fell apart.

I wonder who on earth they'd get to play him?.Another great thing about the series was the long line of well know actors playing the killers.

Want to hear something poor....someone is remaking....'Scarface':(

It'll never work!

Another example of someone trying to improve perfection. How can they expect to top Tony Montana ('F**k the f**king Diaz brothers!")? It can't be done. Pacino owns that roll. Paul Muni did fine with the original movie roll, but Pacino's version is the classic. -- Al

I don't think it should be remade. The original holds up so well, but is also better when seen against the background of its time, just like "The Rockford Files", and other series from the 70s.

By the way, I don't think Columbo was the first "How'd he catch them" show, I think the "Ellery Queen" series with Jim Hutton and David Wayne may have aired first. It was set in the late 40s. That series really did present the clues, and then ended each episode with the classic scene, in which Ellery revealed the murder. Just before the commercial break before that scene, Hutton broke the third wall and spoke to the audience through the camera. He would ask if we noticed certain things.

That show was also my first time seeing John Hillerman, who went on to play Higgins on "Magnum PI". He played a pompous author of murder-mysteries, who was Ellery's rival for solving the mysteries.

Prost!

You may well be right there Brad,I must confess I'd not seen that series and Columbo was on when I was a kid and remember it being a big novelty and very popular over here.It has lasted so well over the decades and remains my favourite all time US Cop show (in the seventies we had a series called 'The Sweeney' which holds top UK Cop show for me).

I feel very sorry Peter Falk is ill these days, his programme holds fond memories of us all sitting down together and and enjoying Columbo get under the skin of his suspect. It was also quite rare that there were no shootouts and he didn't even carry a gun.For me the first six or seven series were the best,it returned in the eighties but it was never quite the same.

I remember as a kid it always made me want to go to California, with its blue sky, long wide roads and general American way of life.I always thought in those warm Californian days how hot it must be in that raincoat!

My second car was my mother's old 84 Buick Skylark, and I always referred to it as my Columbo car, because it looked like the kind of car a 70s TV detective would drive XD

"I'm sorry to bodder ya, but I got one more question..."

One of the first "humble detectives". He was almost always out of his element. He never grabbed a guy by his lapels and threw him against the wall. Columbo just worked it out.

Falk owns Columbo forever. I imagine someday the industry will want to remake "Monk" and hopefully our younger folks will rise up and defend Tony Shaloub's creation and portrayal.

As far as remaking "True Grit", somebody outta bust that guy right in the face, but I'm not gonna do it, I'm not gonna hit ya pilgrim...The hell I'm not!

Another remake possibility would be the 80's classic Miami Vice. The movie remake was well done in a dark, gritty way. A remake in the same mode of the movie could be interesting. No flash and no fancy clothes, but just working class undercover cops. A different angle on the same basic story could do well. The remake would have to have some decent actors and more good story lines than the original, though. -- Al

I might have been mistaken. It might have been The Rockford Files that fell apart.

Yes Kojak,Ironside,Rockford files,Banachek,McCloud (although we always thought him riding his horse through the city was pretty absurd!)Hawaii 5-0 were all on in the 70's,but Columbo was king:cool::)

How about some of the old Westerns? Wagon Train, Gunsmoke, Wyatt Earp (but without the ridiculous and incorrect Buntline Special)

Used to really enjoy 'The Virginian',he was cool when I was a kid!.

It is a pity but US TV will hardly touch westerns anymore with the exception of the western dedicated cable channels that show re-runs. I certainly would enjoy some new westerns although re-making Gunsmoke seems kind of hopeless without the original cast. They all just owned those parts, especially James Arness. The early Gunsmoke episodes were just great and I waited each week to see which bad guy was going to be the recipient of the famous back-hand slap that Dillon used so often. Many great western possibilities. -- Al

But the flash and fancy clothes was the heart of that series. Without that it would just be another boring cop show.;)

I was wondering if anyone would call me on that.:D Yeah, I concede that, but that aspect always bothered me a bit as all the secondary character cops seemed to dress pretty off-the-rack. I did like the Ferrari Spider until they blew it up. It was one of those "time and place" shows that might be hard to recapture. -- Al
