Curious if anyone has ever insured their collection. Started looking into it today and was told it would first need to be appraised. Appreciate any experience with this anyone may have had.

I have insured my collection. I am good friends with Andy Neilson, the owner of K&C, and my collection is about 80% K&C. Andy had been to my home several times for NY Symposia and new the condition of my collection. I made him a list of my collection, and he was kind enough to appraise it for me. However, I imagine a reputable toy soldier dealer in your area could do the same thing. I used Chubb Insurance. They called the policy rider to my home owner's insurance "Fine Arts and Collectibles Insurance." I hope this helps.

It depends on the retail value you paid for the items in your collection. If it’s sizeable, yes. If not, I probably wouldn’t bother. In either case you should consult your insurance broker or company.

Try Collectible Insurance Services, LLC, PO Box 6002, Scottsdale, AZ. 852610-6002; 1-888-837-9537. No Appraisal required. Policy issued by United National Insurance Co. They send you a questionaire about your collection and you choose coverage, deductibles and amounts. Had coverage with them 7 years but never had a claim. I have photos of my collection and keep up with values on Ebay. Homeowners insurance coverage would be too costly. tommy

Always have specialty insurance on a collectable from autos to ???? After hurricane Andrew I lost most of a vast rare book and magazine collection .,,I was told by Homeowners allstate,,Sorry "paper",,Books and whatever ,,500$ Max,,not enough for salvage by the pound,,let alone replacing anything,,
They have NO respect for collections etc,,

USAA is pretty good about covering replacement cost, but you gotta pay the deductible before the coverage kicks in.

Also, the $$$ adds up, PDQ, against your limits if you've got rare, expensive items.

For straight collectibles, they refer you to American Collectors Insurance.

ACI is replacement cost coverage with no deductible.

The yearly premium runs about .8 percent of the estimated value of my collection.

Wouldn't dream of going without it.
