Hi guys,

We've been trying to find a better 'ignore' feature than what comes with the forum software for several years now and since there didn't seem to be anything out there that did exactly what we wanted we hired out the project. Enter 'The Big Eraser.'

As forum admins and moderators we want everyone to get along and enjoy the forum together and if two forum members have a problem we encourage them to work things out. But sometimes there's just that person that drives you crazy and you feel your forum experience would be greatly enhanced if you didn't constantly come across their posts.

The current default forum ignore feature allows you to hide a forum members posts, but every time you come across one, you get a notice telling you that the post isn't visible because you have chosen to ignore the poster. It also offers you a button to press if you want to view the post anyway. That's kind of like putting a sheet over a piece of furniture--you can't see the furniture, but it's obviously under the sheet. Add a sticky note to the sheet that says "To remind yourself how much you dislike the furniture under this sheet, remove sheet" and you've got the current ignore feature.

The new Treefrog ignore feature virtually erases any trace of a member on your ignore list. No posts, no notices of ignored posts...everything looks (on your screen) exactly like it would if that person were not a member of the forum at all. Please note, only forum administrators can add people to the Big Eraser ignore list--the default ignore feature is still there and is what most people will no doubt use and prefer.

If this new feature is something you feel would lower your blood pressure and increase your satisfaction with your forum experience do the following:

1. Contact an administrator or a moderator who will relay your request to an adminstrator. Be discreet and use common sense--Do not use this thread to make your requests - only make requests via private message.

2. Don't make the request unless you are serious. This option is a sort of last resort for people you want to see no trace of. This means if they post you won't see the post, but if they start a thread you won't see the thread either--even if other people post on it. How can you see a thread started by someone who doesn't exist in your world?

3. Once an admin has added the person to your list you should get a private message confirmation from one of us letting you know. How fast we get to the request depends on how many requests there are and what there is time for. It could take several days--the forum is a sliver of what we do at Treefrog Treasures so it really depends on what else is going on.

4. Once someone is on your ignore list don't post this fact. Again, be respectful and use common sense. This new feature is meant to be a courtesy to you, not a discourtesy to them.

We hope you will find this to be a useful new feature. Best regards,

Knew a guy ion the old neighborhood who called himself the eraser. When he erased somebody they were erased permanently. Last I heard he was working for the government, hopefully ours.

This sounds like a great idea to me Shannon, anyone who has a real problem with another member now can avoid all the arguments etc and hopefully enjoy a much happier forum experience, hopefully I'll never have to use it but its certainly a good feature.

Can I ask a question on this please. If someone has been totally removed so you can't see them, and then someone quotes that person, will you still see the quote of the person you no longer want to read??

Interesting question, Rob. I'm curious to test it. Since the quote functionality references the prior post by its ID, I wonder if the blocking function takes it into account. Should be easy enough to test. I'm going to block you temporarily, and come back to this thread and see what it looks like.

Prost!

That IS a good question! I'll have to test it out later today.

Brad...you can't do the Big Eraser...only the mods can implement it for you. The 'ignore' feature that you get to choose isn't quite the same.

I'm willing to test it, if you can set it up.

I still see his quoted post here in this thread:

I have to look at the other threads, to see.

Prost!

I can see his quoted posts in the other threads, too. Without knowing more about how the feature is coded, I suspect that there is something about the quote embedded in another post that prevents the feature from identifying it. Probably identifies the posts by the author's ID and hides them.

Padre, please bring Rob back, unless you'd like me to test something else while he's erased?

Rob, if you can hear me :D , I hope that answered your question.

Prost!
Brad

Thanks for testing. I'll have to check with the guy who coded it it see if there's a way to block quotes too.

Rob...he can see you now!

Sure thing, Padre! Thanks for bringing Rob back, I would definitely not want to block his posts, the forum would be a much duller place.

Prost!

You're too kind!:smile2:

Thanks to both you Brad and Pete for trying this for me, much appreciated both of you.{bravo}}

Seems to be a good idea, but I would ask that go one step further . . . is it possible to delete an entire thread such as "movies", NBA, et cetera so that items not of interest to you don't appear?

Bosun Al

Al, there is not currently a way to block specific threads, however you can hide subforums on the main page by clicking the little button on the far right-hand side of the dark green title bar of the sub-category (such as Discussion). This is useful if there are areas of the forum you never visit and also for shortening up the main page so you don't have to scroll so much to get where you want to go.
This feature hides the sub-categories on the main page but does not remove any threads in those sub-categories from the 'New Posts' or What's New?' links if you navigate the forum in that way.
Best regards,

Without wishing to know who or why, has anyone used this function yet and if so what do you think?

Rob

To be honest, upon reading "The Big Eraser" I assumed HaT Industrie had made a new figure ^&grin
