I know this is an obvious statement and its been discussed many times but anyone who really doesn't get on with someone else should perhaps just think about the ignore button,might make for a smoother ride?

I fail to understand how your little joke post could possibly cause offense? Unless it was read by someone who CHOSE to be offended - and infantile as it may seem to you and I, such people actually do exist, although what universe they CHOOSE to live in is completely beyond me.

If its not too much trouble, can you please put me out of my misery as soon as possible and PM tonights score between Us and Them? It won't appear on Yahoo, the Scotsman, or BBC until Monday morning my time.

I've been biting my tongue on this subject for a while, but I think its about time for just one comment: When I was taking a journalism class in college, my professor told us that the best way to judge a country's civil rights record was to read its newspapers. If the newspapers complained about the government you could be pretty sure that the country had pretty good civil rights. Conversely, if the newspapers constantly praised the government, you could be pretty sure the civil rights record was abysmal. We have all complained pretty regularly about the way the moderators handle things, quite a few of our complaints remain uncensored for all to see, and nobody has been permanently banned as far as I know. Thus using my professors maxim, we certainly have a free forum.

Oh, and for the record, in the United States, Great Britain (from wence our common law derived) and the commonwealth nations, free speech which attacks or insults other individuals is effectively censored (via the wallet) by means of a liable or slander lawsuit.
 
I hope my Scottish friends know how hard it is for me to want Scotland to beat Italy tonight,why?.....I looooooooooove Pasta!!!:D:D
 
Censorship vs Effective Moderation

As a relatively new member may I be permitted to offer the following observations:
1) without rules there is anarchy
2) as a bulletin board owner/operator myself, I am only too aware that a lack of rules means that good members will stop posting and stop coming back if the contents of the bulletin board are not to generally acceptable.
3) I've seen many examples of bulletin boards that are "badly moderated" resulting in poor posting numbers and poorly written posts.

On the reverse side I know of at least one Stalin- like site (with advertising) in which the site owner will allow no negative perception whatsoever to be published on any advertiser and there are 15 different rules that have to be applied to each member and each post before it is allowed to be published.

If you're wondering how the site survives, its because the owner fondly imagines he has a monopoly on certain advertising and information.

I noted that a few of the allegedly more outspoken members are Aussies (and yes...I'm one too- an Aussie that is). May I offer the following explanation- we're generally more outgoing and forthright than the traditional Brits (class-ridden) and the Yanks (money- driven). To an Aussie a digging implement is a "spade" and manure is "****"- its as simple as that.

However it is a red rag when it is suggested on a Toy soldier forum that Australians have no right to free speech because they live in a former "colony" -I dont care how many smartarse smiley faces there are in the post. So perhaps members/ toy soldier forum owners that live in glass houses shouldnt throw stones at Aussies- you may get a boulder back:eek::eek:

BTW I have correctly entitled my post to what I believe is the real issue.

Hmmmm.....I honestly don't think I've ever seen posts on here that warrant a liable or slander lawsuit. Even me and Pierre were relatively restrained and kept our insults between ourselves. We, at least, didn't resort to the level of a "Foul-Mouthed and Racist Rant" (unquote), unlike a certain other "gentleman".

Harry my point wasn't that any of our comments warrant a liable or slander lawsuit, merely that even in free societies, where free speech is treasured, some censorship exists.

I dont recall advocating that this blog be dominated with personal insulting, i.e., "c-ap". Clearly, there are plenty of other sites where more controversial issues are covered, and where anyone can get their fill of vitriol.

But as Shannon reiterated, I fully understand that its Treefrog's forum, and therefore they make the rules/standards. Treefrog could require that all sentences begin with "Treefrog" if they so desired --- it is their blog. (However I suspect their membership would be small)

My beef, if it truly is one, is that I enjoy a good debate. And I dont like it when my ability to do so is hindered by certain rules. Of course, Treefrog has no responsibility or requirement to restructure the blog to MY liking, but that also shouldnt mean I HAVE to like it :)

A strong debater does not need to personally insult others to get their point across. Tossing out insults is a sign of a weakness, not strength. I will never advocate for such behavior. I guess the question is: where does communicating one's thoughts or ideas in a strong manner cross the line? That is a very grey area.

I don't disagree Louis. Although just in my opinion of course, I would call it self-restraint rather than censorship.
Okay, this is just going round in circles between opposite viewpoints, so I've had it with this particular thread and won't be posting on this one again.
