Just read that he passed away. I can remember "Gunsmoke" back in the day. JA also played "The Thing" in the great sci-fi movie.

James Arness Death

James Arness, better known as Matt Dillon, has passed away. I think he was to the tv western what John Wayne was to the big screen. Was also the alien being in the original movie The Thing. Another great tv/movie icon has crossed over.

He was a great one. I was posting news same time as you. Chris

RIP James Arness. I still remember how impressed I was with his Marshal Dillon character in the early days of the show. He had an edge to him that other characters in TV westerns didn't. I loved his bare handed beat-downs of the various badmen, especially that round house back-handed slap. I still watch the re-runs when I can find them. He was the best. -- Al

You think Matt and Miss Kitty were an "item?" Good old James Arness. Matt Dillon was another great western "dad" figure.

I guess I'm surprised that he was still alive. Great "voice" as Matt Dillon.

Re: James Arness Death

Don't forget also that he was one of the GI's in "Battleground" (he was killed in the firefight by the railroad overpass - his rifle froze up).

In real life Arness was an infantryman in the Italian campaign.

I did not realize that. I have the DVD, will have to watch again. Wounded at Anzio.

That's a great movie for picking out various actors in their early roles.
