It would be interesting to see John's artistry with Ancients. - Trojan War would be a great choice.

Punic Wars would also be an interesting subject with early Romans vs. Hannibal's Carthage and its colorful army of Africans, Celts, Gauls - and maybe best of all - Elephants.

Trojan War would be my first choice...Troy vs Greece...

this would be good...about 1 1/2 feet tall...enough for 30-40 men as the legend goes...
