JJD Highlanders - All bright & shiny (1 Viewer)

Konrad...

first off...don't even think about glossing the family pet...he wouldn't look good...^&grin...

I'm not sure all of the JJD figures would appeal to me in glossies...

I think it lends more to the most colorful figures...but not the Indians...

the Highlanders are well suited for this application...I think...as are the red coated regimented British from Quebec...B of M and Ticonderoga...

but I don't think glossy Rangers would appeal to me...

both the USC and BCH sides of Chippawa would probably look snazzy...as would the Gordons of the First Sudan War...but I don't think the Mahdist would look good in a glossy...nor Knights of the Sky or The Condor series...

I bet the Snow Shoes glossies would be a sweet teaser!!!!

Konrad, The Highlanders are looking Good. Their colors are bright and well painted straight out of the box making them a great option to convert to glossy.

You might find the need to do some repainting on other lines of JJD figures as their colors (IMO) are on the dull side giving them a more realistic mat look. As an example, I will always go over the redcoats with a clean brighter shade of red which really ''pops'' visually when covered with the gloss coat. - Ken

Just don't go to sleep anywhere near Konrad at the moment folks - sounds like you would likely wake up with a SHINE! There's no-one so brush-happy as a newly converted GLOSSY-MAN!:D These look just FAB-U-LOUS!!!{sm3} johnnybach

These latest batches are really excellent, Konrad!

To the list of suppliers of castings, let's remember Tradtion, and Imrie-Risley (though the latter is currently up for sale, so availability may be in question in the near future). Also, Forty-Third, Ltd, have some of the Phoenix catalog available.

There are also the German makers Peipp, Hecker & Goros, MiniWelt, Rylit, Mueritz-Miniaturen (who are licensed to produce Ulrich Puchala's excellent 54mm figures, all of whose products can be bought from Berliner Zinnfiguren (as JB noted).

The Spanish maker Army House also had a catalog of castings, including the SYW Prussians produced by Franklin Mint in Germany, but I think AH may have gone out of business, their website appears to have expired.

Prost!

Johnny, Laugh! nearly bought my own beer! ^&grin^&grin

Actually in Konrad's defence he turned to the dark side a while back when he commissioned me to paint a number of gloss sets. :wink2:^&grin

Konrad, these are excellent, I wonder what the Sudan figures I have would look like in a gloss finish. {sm2}

Great stuff.

Hi Jeff,
I have an excellent idea :wink2:
Why don't you send me all your Sudan figures?
I will get them "shined up" real nice and then I make a bunch of pictures so you can see ^&grin
How about that? :rolleyes2:

Hi Ken,
for now, my plans are only to convert Highlanders to the glossy finish.
For "Mitre Hat" or "Tricorn" troops I will be waiting and see what comes up in John's new line of the 7-Year War in Europe.
I have a feeling that Frederick's Prussian troops and their enemies as well will make splendid glossy figures :)

I'll second that--both the Prussians, and the "Culloden"-series royal troops should look fine in a gloss finish, too. They're excellent, I think his best work to date.

Prost!

One more to show that I got done last weekend.
JR-08 The Charging Standardbearer
Hope you like him.

Here's a resently converted Dragoon from JJD's Battle of Culloden series.
Done in my usual way; with a good amount of repainting on the figure of the dragoon - Redoing the face, deliniating the coat lining, vest and pants (all one solid mass of yellow on original) and repainting the coat to a brighter shade of red. Then finished w/ a couple of coats of clear acrylic. - Ken

It turned out pretty nicely. Looking forward to doing more of these great JJD mounted troopers.

Konrad and Ken.

You have both shown just what fantastic detail shows up on JJD figures with a coat of gloss varnish. ^&cool

Jeff

I find these conversions to gloss to be absolutely stunning. If I had the talent (or eyesight) to attempt the process, my Culloden series would now be glossy. You guys have just done outstanding work. This series, good as it is in matte, (and I think they are the best figures on the market), just come alive in the high gloss finish. Brilliant work. -- Al

Hi Ken,
that is very good rework you did on this Dragoon.
I like both, the black line accents on the yellow uniform and the bright red on the coat.
Eventually I might get to do something similar at a later point this year.
Great work :salute::
Konrad

Nice work Ken and Konrad on giving the figures a glossy coat. Do you use Humbrol clear or a brand of acrylic gloss? I have used Humbrol on some figures. John

Greetings John,
I like to brush on two coats of Tamiya Clear X-22. It is listed with their hobby acrylic paints. - This is a clear acrylic varnish which gives a great deep gloss shine.

If repainting is done over an already painted figure like this JJD Dragoon, I will first brush on a coat of a ''milky'' hobby acrylic varnish (Vallajo) over the repainted areas to act as a sealer before applying the Tamiya (the Tamiya can lift some of the new paint if not sealed with a ''milky'' acrylic varnish first - something I've learned from experience). - Ken
