Sad to hear of his passing last week. He was arguably the funniest guy on the funniest show in the 1970/80s - SCTV. So many great characters. Guy Cabellero, Count Floyd, Sammy Maudlin. He parodied all the TV-related characters and celebrities of the times with comic genius. If you never saw that show, get the DVDs. It was funny and smart in a way that no longer exists.

Yeah, saw that yesterday, sad to see him go. You're right about SCTV, great show, going all the way back to its earliest version, better than its competitor SNL. Flaherty was great with all his characters. He played Count Floyd so well, sending up all of the local monster movie hosts around the country, like Svengoolie or Dr. Shock (Philly's own). And not just as a host playing cheesy horror films, but that he was the alter ego of anchorman Floyd Robertson. Just the right amount of embarrassment as a "serious" newsman having to double as the Saturday monster movie host. "Ah-ooo! Heh, heh, heh, very scarrry, boys and girls!" And I enjoyed seeing Flaherty in all his cameos in various movies.
He was a Yinzer, too, one of Pittsburgh's favorite sons.
Rest in Peace, Guy Caballero!

Count Floyd's spoof of 3D TV movies was absolutely hilarious. First, he would sell the glasses for some outrageous price and then he and his sidekick would find every excuse to poke something toward the camera during the show. He would also begin his show by howling like a wolf even though he was supposed to be a vampire. I do remember the UHF channels in the DC area having these horror hosts that often played other roles on the daytime station. In DC, there was Count Gore de Vol who also was "Captain 20" on the kids show. There was "Captain Chesapeake" on channel 45 in Baltimore with his sidekick Mondy the sea monster. The same guy was "Ghost Host" on the Saturday night horror show. Those were the days.
