I wanted to start this thread to talk about the ever popular BM series of John Jenkins Designs and his new sets coming out.

I really think this line of Toy Soldeirs are really special and have a neat quality to them. Also the subject matter is of great interest and not being pursued by other makers like K&C.

What does everyone think about the "limited production" of his sets??

It does create a nice collectors item with small offerings and many other small sets to follow in the range - IMO.

So lets hear it...................:D

Well when he first released them and I started buying them I thought 250 was a good number. Lately as his sets are no longer available I wonder. I have all his sets almost and think they are all wonderful. I love his canoes and have been waiting for something like this from other manufacturers for some time. I have always loved this time period ever since I read the last of the Mahicans when I was a boy. I was glad to see some of his more recent releases with higher run numbers just in case I can't always afford the releases right away. I am glad that he so far only releases 2-3 new sets a month. I think it keeps his line affordable and fairly easy to maintain. With my K&C lines I always have to pick and choose because their is now way I could afford all the new stuff each month. With Jenkin's stuff 2-3 sets a month isn't bad. I am looking forward to his British artillery coming later this year and I hope he produces some cavalry.

Because of the limited production numbers. I will not be buying any of these figures, even thou I think they are very nice. I like to repeat buy the same figures therefore enabling me to build large troop formations and dioramas over time. I'm afraid these sets will sell out before I can buy enough of them.

So I will leave these wonderful figures for other to collect.

Thanks, Ron

for starting this thread. I found the John Jenkins' line just early enough to get all issued sets so far. My decision to collect this line was first of all supported by the subject. Then, after receiving the first sets, it was a great pleasure to find out that they are actually top quality Toy Soldiers.

The low number of sets (250) for several of the releases adds some value to them. With that I don't mean actually $'s but the feeling of collecting something not that common and widely available.

Now I am looking forward to future releases with hopefully lots more to come.

I am quite sure that John Jenkins is establishing his name in the Toy Soldiers Collector's World right now with the quality of his 18th century collection.

Happy Collecting, everybody!

I like the looks of his line but I've never been a fan of collectable formats- course if I wasnt on a pension and was still 'earning' I'd prolly feel different lol. I've been burned in the past by collectable formats- collecting full sets and spending thousands only to have the manufacterer decide to rerelease the line :(

Still for many people it is a great aspect of this hobby and so though it isnt for me I dont begrudge people who can afford it :D

That doesnt mean I dont appreciate seeing his work though- he has some of the best Toy Soldier figures available as his style is very 'visually striking'.

Much like Kings Man I prefer to collect units of troops- for FIW 54mm I'm looking to have 20 of each company (line, Grenadier, rangers, lights etc) for example. I use mine for wargaming though so it is a hobby that favours larger numbers than display.

I agree John Jenkins is establishing himself quite well - due to the absence of several of his sets on the market. They have taken off and collectors are really going after them.

I also agree that JJ is a valuable set due to the limited number in production - I like what you said when you refered to them as special - something not a lot of people will have - I AGREE. Value isnt just on the almighty dollar - but, the art itself - IMO.

This time period has really struck a cord in the hobby hasnt it? The French and Indian War offers many great battles and Personality Figures too.

I am just really taken by this collection - OF COURSE I AM A COMMITTED KING AND COUNTRY MAN - but, this set offers a little something more.

Ron

Hi Ron,

since I joined the forum I could very well see that you are a very comitted K & C collector. That's why I do appreciate that you are open to adress and recognize quality items from other manufacturers, in this case John Jenkins.
I was a bit surprised that you actually brought up this thread.

I totally agree with you that the 7-years or French and Indian War delivers plenty opportunities for troops with colorful uniforms as well as a lot of Personality figures.

Some of them are already in John's program, like General Braddock, General Wolfe, Lienard de Beaujeu. We see what else he will come up with.

One of my future display plans is a scene with the K & C 16th and 17th dragoons as well as the "prisoner" and the horsedrawn supply cart. The "Scout" has to be in there too.

But that is only when JJ doesn't eat up all my hobbybudget.

Happy Collecting!

Konrad

Although I'm a dealer and not a collector (at least not in 54mm, as most of you know, I'm into the smaller 20mm stuff), I've got to say John makes state of the art figures with terrific paint jobs at the going market rate for this type of figure in the marketplace.

Above all of that, John is a very responsive company owner, he has emailed me numerous times and is open to listening to what the customers want, so if any of you have specific requests, I will pass them along. Andy Neilsen is THE most responsive company owner, he and I speak via phone at least once per month.....................

I am telling you - this John Jenkins has it going on.

These figures are really going to be something to own. I believe he has some great ideas coming to life in these metal figures - I simply love his art. :D

I agree with all the below comments, this is going to be a very nice series of figures and it is already starting to become very hard to get the early sets. You can not get a set of BM-01 for love or money.

A little note to everyone if you have not got all the BM-02's you want, you had better buy some very quickly, as I have been having a look around today and all the dealers look to be out of them.:( :(

If anyone knows were there are some left they might want to let people know. Sierra, March Through Time, Maitland, Hobby Bunker, Minutemen are all out.

Aussie Monty:)

PS I am still looking for sets of the BM-01 and will pay top dollar for a set, let me know a price if anyone has some extras. Please do not make me beg. Please, please, please.

Has anyone bought the canoes and displayed them with your figures??

Those canoes are very sweet ;) I look forward to his artillery - that will be very interesting and I am sure a fast seller.

Have you guys notices he has not done any mounted figures?

Ron,

I recieved a CAN-01 the other day, very nice set and as with all of JJ's sets each figure is doing something different and varied. Two of the figures are looking to the shore and one shouting at someone.

To the displaying of the set, John has not shown it in a setting yet, so no idea were it should sit, unlike his British Line display. But what about this, in a display on a river by itself but most likely with the other CAN-02, with one or more of the WIM sets on a river bank would be the go, maybe even mix in one of the FM-02 or 03 sets. They could even be shooting/attacking a BM-01 & 06 set. But you will need half a table to display it.

You would think there maybe a Mounted Officer/General British or French in the future, was there any cavalry at the two battles John is doing?

Here is part of an email I recieved from John the other day about future releases, but no mention of mounted figures in it or on his web site:

I try to keep release schedules under wraps, as being a small company.... and in competition with some of the larger companies I need to keep flexible and a bit more secretive.

Having said that, there is about 2 months of releases for the Quebec series coming up, which will give those collecting the Braddocks stuff a chance to catch up. Then its more or less all Braddock releases untill October, 12 sets altogether, which should see the series complete.

I've almost finished the two Dead Commander sets, and have only a combat set left to sculpt. So all the sculpting should be done by the end of this month.

The main problem is factory production, its pretty slow going, and you need to have trained painters to get a decent painted figure. and these are hard to come by, and take time to train.

I'm expecting the Virginian masters back from the factory next week, and am looking forward to painting them. It will be something a bit different.

John is always very helpful and will to talk to anyone (even me), as I need to order a couple more BM-04 & 05's. I will drop him an email and see what he says about mounted figures. He may even release a few more photo's of sculpted figures completed.

AM

Great report ! I think he would want to make a mounted figure of two - the canoes are simply too cool

I plan on getting them. The Braddock series is going fast isnt it - I look forward to more release with them.

Great stuff ! Do you have John Jenkins email? PM me with it if you would.

Thanks, Ron

Those BM set will probally go fast.

I wonder what else he has plaaned for the BM series??

Since on his website he lists the seven year war as one of the first truly globle conflicts fought in several continents and countries , I hope he touches on some of the battles in Europe. Cavalry played an important role in the outcome of several of these battles. I always in part judge manufacturers by how well they can sculpt a horse. I've always had a fondness for cavalry ever since I was a kid with my Napoleonic and 7th cavalry figures. Even though I don't carry the full lines of some ranges I still will pick up a nice looking cavalry piece in that range. As far as the Braddock range I think a mounted officer or general is a must. I would also like to see a supply wagon.

All that sounds really good. I agree.

Hopefully we will see some Horsemen in the BM Series.

Further to my thread below, I have recieved the following from John Jenkins today about Cavalry and Mounted troops:

At Monongahela, there was an unit of cavalry Stewart's, Virginia light horse my research tells me there were approx 28 mounted troops. They were apparently used as scouts and messangers. Officers were mounted, Braddock had his horse replaced 5 times.

There were no mounted French troops at Monongahela.

At The plains of Abraham, there were no British mounted troops. The British army had landed by boats and scaled the cliffs to reach the plains. Even the officers were on foot. Artillery was man handled up to the plains.

The French army, the officers were mounted and Brig.Gen Bougainville's relief force from the West had approximately 200 French cavalry. These were called Corps de Cavallerie, and were mainly used as scouts.

I did get out of him there will be Mounted figures. But if I told you is would spoil the fun. :p :D

I also asked for any new photo's but no luck, so keep an eye on his web site www.johnjenkinsdesigns.com :(

A Mounted Figure of Braddock getting his Horse Shot out from under him would be very cool  - dont you think?

AM - did he sound like he had some new releases coming in APRIL or MAY ??
