Watching this tonight. It is on the list of top one hundred westerns. Any comments from the film buffs on this forum

I have to say, as uncool as it may be, this movie is not one of my favorite westerns. It just never grabbed me, even though I like Sterling Hayden in his noir films, and the rest of the cast is good. Being as it was a Republic picture, (aka shoestring budget), the production values and set reflect this. The story sure has more undertones to it than the average western but that doesn't make the story and writing any more watchable from my POV. -- Al

This was my first Sterling Hayden movie.
Just been reading about him so I picked this up.
I quite enjoyed the chemistry between the two female leads.

Hayden did some good crime films such as 'Manhandled', 'The Asphalt Jungle', and 'The Killing'. May be best known amongst younger film buffs as General Ripper in 'Dr. Strangelove'. -- Al

Al, those are all good Stering Hayden movies ..... also liked Hayden in "Suddenly" with Frank Sinatra. As for Johnny Guitar, well let's say there's always at least one stinker in every Hollywood resume. :wink2:^&grin

Johnny Guitar is creepy. Hayden did another western with Ann Sheridan. Take Me To Town. annsheridan16.jpg

I'm with Al & Buster on this one

The title of this movie may have been Johnny Guitar, but the name above it was Joan Crawford's. Any western where the crucial casting was that of the leading lady as the star had an immediate problem with what type of Western drama could be centred on a female lead character. And the casting of Crawford in the lead role of Vienna just appeared to be a gender clash especially with her dressed as a man and wearing a gunslinger's pistol and belt in quite a few scenes- this inevitably confused the audience. This was Crawford's first film in Technicolor and old Joany baby soon found out that she did not film well in colour. That is why she reverted quickly back to monochrome-in fact after Johnny Guitar she demanded black and white cinematography whenever she could.

I came up with a "W" equation for this movie- Western movie+Woman star = Weird ^&grin............. and weird is what has marked this picture ever since its first release. Its top 100 western status is I believe because of it's renowned director Nicholas Ray and so called "experts" who- just like the audience- didn't really understand what the hell it was about but reckoned it must be good western movie because of who directed it-consequently it appears on the list.

Yea well it seems the movie was about the two female protagonists and Sterling was just there as a prop.
It is classified as an example of Film Noir by some.
