This newsletter features 3 new aircraft from WW2 all in 1/30 scale and they
are as follows:
WOW135 The Nakajima Ki-44 Shoki (Allied name Tojo) was a single seat fighter
aircraft used by the Japanese during WW2, the aircraft first flew in 1940
and entered service in 1942. The Ki-44 was a replacement for the Ki-43 but
proved to be less nimble and had poorer visibility than its predecessor.
However it soon became obvious that the Ki-44 was a superior combat aircraft
overall when compared to the Ki-43. It could match most Allied types in
climbs and dives and had greater armament than the Ki-43. This armament of
four 12.7mm guns and two 20mm cannons made the Ki-44 a useful addition for
the Japanese in tackling the American B-29 Superfortresse’s which were now
bombing Japan.
Our Ki-44 model is one flown by Yoshio Yoshida an Ace who managed to bring
down six B-29’s all at night during the last year of the war. The stylised
‘kill’ insignia on the side of his machine all represented a B-29 which had
succumbed to this pilot. Yoshio described a B29 as falling like the leaves
of a Maple Tree or Samara if they lost an engine whilst carrying a full bomb
load, as they would descend in a circular fashion to the ground. Yoshida was
selected to fly the Mitsubishi J8M which was a copy of the German Komet,
however the war ended before he could fly this aircraft.
We have two KI-44 in stock at a price of $599 which includes free postage
worldwide, EU and UK customers please contact us for a £ price to include
postage which will vary depending on where you live. RS053 Japanese sentry
is included free with this aircraft, which will be available shortly and be
posted separately, sorry no picture available yet but he is a very smart
looking soldier!
Our second aircraft WOW136 is the ubiquitous Junkers Ju.88 bomber which
served in every theatre of WW2. This twin engined multirole combat aircraft
was designed in the mid 1930’s as a fast bomber. Initially it suffered from
a number of technical issues but these were ironed out and the Ju88 became
one of the most versatile combat aircraft of the war. It served in a variety
of roles such as dive bomber, night fighter, torpedo bomber, heavy fighter
and also in the reconnaissance role. During its long career the Junkers
assembly lines ran constantly from 1936 to 1945, over 16,000 Ju 88’s were
built in many different variants, more than any other twin engine aircraft
of WW2.
Our latest variant is a Russian front winter variant and comes in a white
washed pattern with green mottle pattern camouflage. SS056B Breakfast Club
set is included free as per the pictures attached.
We have 6 of these aircraft available for immediate dispatch, please note
there will be no more.
Priced at $899 which includes free shipping worldwide, EU and UK customers
please contact us for a £ price to include postage which will vary depending
on where you live.
The B-17 flying Fortress is one of the most easily recognizable and iconic
aircraft of WW2 and is our second one so far in our short production
history. The B-17 was a four engine heavy bomber developed in the 1930’s for
the USAAC. Boeing competed against Douglas and Martin for a contract to
build 200 bombers. The Boeing entry outperformed its rivals but lost the
contract due to the prototype crashing due to pilot error. However the air
corps were impressed enough with its performance to find a legal loop hole
that allowed them to order 13 more for test evaluation. Although the Martin
twin engine aircraft were nearly half the cost of the B-17, the air corps
were convinced that the B-17 with its four engines would offer a better
longer bombing range capability and eventually managed to procure nearly 200
bombers by December 1941, just in time for hostilities. The B-17 saw service
mainly in Europe although some were deployed in the Pacific. Over 12,000
B-17’s were manufactured during the course of the war and were used post war
by many air forces including the CIA who used them to drop Taiwanese agents
into China!
Our latest B-17 ‘Dragon Lady’ WOW137 belonged to 385TH Bomber Group based at
RAF Great Ashfield, she was forced to ditch into the channel after being hit
by flak. Pilot Edwin Harrison pulled 6 crew members out of the sinking
aircraft and was later awarded the DSC for his actions. We have one Dragon
Lady available for immediate dispatch with more to follow in a few months
time. If you would like one please drop me an email and state whether you
would like a model now or in the future as and when they become available.
If you would like a custom B-17 in your own markings please feel free to
drop us a line and we will do our best to make you happy!
Priced at $1500 which includes free postage worldwide, EU and UK customers
please contact us for a £ price to include postage which will vary depending
on where you live.
All our aircraft are hand carved Mahogany and take over 60 hours to
manufacture, hence the price and the limited numbers. However if you would
prefer to spread the payments over 3-6 months please contact us for a quote
with interest free payment terms. All our aircraft will appear on our
website shortly www.tomgunn.co.uk where you can see more pictures and
details.

That’s all for this week guys, see you in London if you are going to be
there and speak to you all next week with news of our new figures.
Agree with Al 100%. "Natural metal finish" on a model is hard to replicate and frequently ends up looking completely fake. Gunn's Tojo look very believable in that regard.
We have 2 factories, one that makes large models and one that makes small models. The small plane factory weathers our planes as I am sure you have no doubt noticed, the large plane factory does not.
We have had customers complain that they do not like weathering and prefer their models new looking, we also have others saying they do like weathering. Therefore all the models that come out of one factory are weathered and all the others that come from the other are not. That way customers have a choice of weathered or non weather models. As Wayne said you can always add it but you cannot take if off!
A quick question as a plane buyer (although not a TG one as yet).
I'm a 'See before I buy' type of fella. I'm lucky that I travel fairly extensively in Asia and Europe, are there any retail places I can see a TG plane eye to eye before I purchase?
