I've just seen the photos of K&C's Sons of the Empire figures in gloss. These look absolutely stunning. Previously on this forum I had seen John Jenkins figures gloss coated by our talented forum colleague Dragoon and I found them wonderful, much better than the matt version. Just my personal taste, of course, but I really feel that these K&C and JJ figures look much better in gloss than in matt. If one is talking about WWII figures I find it hard to imagine those figures gloss painted. But when it comes to earlier more colourful periods I find much stronger appeal in gloss, unless it's connoisseur or First Legion.
Especially when it comes to Jenkins figures, that are not my thing (though JJ does have wonderful and interesting ranges) I was flabbergasted at how smashing those figures look when gloss coated.
With K&C, have you thought of how nice their Napoleonics would look in gloss? Will we one day have a gloss version?
Does anybody out there feel the same?

I think the new Napolean in Egypt series would be outstanding in gloss. -- Al

I'm with you Paulo. Very happy to see what K&C is doing w/ the Sons of the Empire range. Hopefully JJD will entertain doing the same thing. I believe I still have some 50 or more JJD figures I want to convert over to glossy. It would be great if they just came that way. - Ken

Yes - is my answer Paulo - I'm not fond of matte figures - at least not for the more colourful uniforms of yester-year, which I think are more suited to gloss. I wasn't really aware of the older K&C glossies until recently - and once I saw them - I just loved those. I can't understand for the life of me - why K&C stopped producing them - and went over to matte exclusively. Up to them I suppose - but I think that they might at last be realising that they might be losing out on potential sales to people like me- and by the sound of it - you too johnnybach

Hi, you got that right, not just with K&C but also with John Jenkins...:wink2:. Unfortunately I also like the best matt figures...

I think the manufacturers are listening, hearing a lot of people saying about the
growing interest in glossy.Glossies are a little cheaper (?) too and may be a way of keeping sales up.JMO.

I have to agree, I would also like to see what John Firth could do with K&C WII figure and his superior gloss finish.

Hi Scot

Not WW2 figures but watch this space for some superior gloss figures appearing in the next few months, which will be a project between Martin Tabony and I and available to all who would like them. Thats all I can say for now except that they will also be available in a matte finish if preferred^&confuse^&confuse^&confuse

Regards John:salute::

Appears that the K&C matte or gloss figures are the same price.

Having seen the incredible quality of your work only in photos to date (and knowing that I have a RAF Pilot and maybe some RFC ground crew coming at some point) I would definitely be interested in obtaining your new line of superior gloss figures.

I can't be sure because I haven't seen them in person, but by the photos it looks like there is the same amount of shading and painting detail, be it glossy or matt. - I'm guessing they are all the same matt figures, the glossies just happen to be finished w/ a clear acrylic gloss coat. If anything , the glossies should be more expensive because they involve one more step. :wink2: - Ken

I have often wondered why gloss figures (from Britains as they are the only mass player that does gloss) are cheaper?

A) Gloss paint (at least mine does) costs more to buy

B) Takes longer to dry so could hinder production times

yet it is about $4 dollars cheaper per figure than a matte one.

Any thoughts?

I believe Britains gloss figures like their Redcoats line are smaller in scale than their matt line of figures. That might be be a reason for a price difference.

With anything mass produced the materials are small part in comparison to the labour time. I don't think the paint used in China is in little tinlets but is probably issued to the painters from much bigger containers. Most large scale commercial painting operations have heating facilities to speed up the drying time of paint. On the other hand the time spent makes all the difference. If a figure is painted in say black hat, flesh face, red jacket and blue trousers. If the paint is gloss then as soon as it's dry it's ready to go, but if it is matt then it has to be varnished = more time = more cost. If that figure has shading and highlighting that is on all the colours, so that's seven more processes! Each one may be a small amount but they easily add up.

As one who has always loved your gloss work, all I can say is I am thrilled and I await developments. -- Al

Apparently u loose details with gloss finish
Look at Beau Geste matte and gloss same figure
I'm very anxious to see KC gloss finish on SOE
Gloss to that quality of sculpting???
It would be like miniatures in gloss not to say
connaisseur in gloss
Very curious to see, very.

Any news yet John on this initiative - or am I jumping the gun? johnnybach

I was not impressed with KC SOE gloss
I bought the matte ones because i collect SOE
There was something not right with SOE gloss
Lots of people probably liked it i imagined
but not me, that's only my opinion and not
an attack on KC. I'm a KC collector.
So i'm anxious to see what u guys will come up with
