France 1940 - Owing to the Hurricane's rugged construction, ease of maintenance and repair in the field, together with its docile landing and take-off characteristics, coupled with a wide-track undercarriage, it was selected to go to France in 1940 as the principal RAF fighter.

The fighters were based in forward airfields and mostly reported that their Hurricanes were a match for the Bf 109's. In terms of performance the Bf 109 had better speed and climb, but the Hurricane was reportedly easier to fly and had better manoeuvrability. It was also relatively robust in its construction.

Broadly speaking their relative performances were 'close enough', so that the particular situation and actions of the pilots had more weight in deciding combat outcomes. In the Battle of France and Battle of Britain, Hurricane pilots didn't feel the inferiority they did with later Bf 109 versions, and in 1940 were confident in taking it on.
