I will be visiting the US later in the year, probably November, was thinking of Chicago, any shops selling K &C in the area. I went to gettysburg a few years ago and spent an excellent couple of hours in the Gettysburg Toy Soldier shop, the owner was very friendly and it was great to have a chat with with him.

Any advice on local shops would be appreciated.

The nearest toy soldier store that I am aware of is the Toy Soldier Shoppe, in Milwaukee, WI., which is 90 miles north of Chicago, which is about 1 and 1/2 hours away by car.

Dear "Peiper007":

The Toy Soldier Shoppe run by the ever freindly Paul Herrmann who knows a lot about military history & toy soldiers is located at 3775 South 108th Street in Greenfield, Wisconsin 53228 with telephone# 414-302-1850 & E-mail of pherrmann@toysoldiershoppe.net if you need to contact him. Greenfield, WI is a nearby Southwest suburb of the City of Milwaukee and 108th Street is also Wisconsin State Highway 100 on the west side of Milwaukee County. The Toy Soldier Shoppe is located in a small strip mall on the west side of Hwy 100. I have been a customer of the Toy Soldier Shoppe before the store was over 6 months old back in late 1991. This current location is the third store they have been in and it is bigger & nicer than the first two. I hope you have the time to visit The Toy Soldier Shoppe later this year.

I little bit off topic, but if you're coming to Chicago, then you should really go see the U-505 German submarine at the Museum of Science and Industry. It's truly awesome and will give you some of the backstory on the submariners in the Kriegsmarine series.

Was that the U-Boat that the Americans got the German Enigma Code-machine off.

Dear "SGT Rock":

Yes, not a bad idea! I remember going to the Museum of Science & Industry on the south side of Chicago near Lake Michigan when I was in the 5th grade on a school trip. It should be if interest for anyone interested in WW2 history. As I recall there was a short movie shown about how the U-505 got captured in the Atlantic Ocean.

peiper, these are all good recomendations. bill moore is close to ohare airport and has some excellent dioramas and interesting ones in his spacious house and has many a discontinued set for sale. right near his home is the cantigny museum which is the museum of the big red one. many us tanks adorn the beautiful grounds and there is an excellent museum with life size dios and trenches. next go downtown to the science and industry museum. they created a new exhibiut inside for the u505 and have a spitfire and a tropical painted stuka, one of the only stukas around. and yes , a quick hour and 20 miniutes gets you up to the toy soldier shoppe of paul hermann's. very friendly and a great variety of manufacturers. probably the most of any toy soldier shoppe around. good luck and have fun. and you might want to go to wrigley field, historic home of the chicago cubs. take care greg

The enigma machine was removed from U-571, and I believe that the British can lay claim to that accomplishment. U-505 was captured by the U.S. though, in what was an orchestrated to attempt to successfully board and capture a German submarine. The website for the Museum of Science and Industry has a section on their website about its history. It's worth checking out.

Aussies sunk U-571 and nothing was recovered.

I will post some pics of the U-505 in the history thread. J
