Wow, thanks Louis and jazzeum. Very impressive indeed. So all of these were made from wood? Hand carved and hand painted? I'm sure these were probably boxed and shipped in pieces and one assembles for display. What holds the wings in place?

They were shipped complete, with no assembly required. They came with stands, or could be displayed on their landing gear alongside the pilots, ground crew, related vehicles, and airfield diorama pieces K&C produced. These included:

I have everything listed (my Ambulance is in Olive Drab, Larry and Hans have the blue one; the RAF Control Tower is being custom built for me). Back in the day, when you bought a warbird, you got one related pilot figure with it. This stopped after 1994, and thereafter you got just the warbird. I have 39 Warbirds in total, I think 6 came with the figures.

The figures were called the "Commemorative Series" and were made between 1990 and 1994. For some bizarre reason, when Andy made a limited edition (200 produced) Gulf War U.S. Marines set, he included it in the commemorative series with the pilots. Go figure.

By the way on one of Tradwind Direct's redundant pages I notice that reference was made to a clipped-wing version of the Spitfire. Was that the B version of the Mk V?

Yes, I believe the clipped wing Spitfire was the Mark V-B, although it could have been the Mark V. I have one, but it doesn't specify whether its the V or V-B. It was one or the other. In addition to the Mark I/II and the Mark V, K&C also did a Mark IX, in Canadian Air Force Colors. I've only seen a photo of the Mark IX, but the Mark I/II is one of the most common warbirds, and can be found.

By the way, Tradewind Direct may have redundant pages for the wood version of the Iwo Jima Sherman (only 5 ever made), as well as several of the other old wood metal and resin vehicles, as they used to sell these items. How do you find their redundant pages? I would love for everyone to get access to the old photographs of these vehicles.

Brad, yes Bonnie and Tradewind Direct are still very much a dealer, though with far less variety than what they had up until this time last year. Thanks for the help finding the redundant pages. I remember when Tradewind had the stuff in stock. By the way, the photo is of the resin and metal Long Range Desert Group Chevy 30 CWT Truck on my (originally Afrika Corps) Diorama. Its one of my favorite pieces, although the resin and metal New York Symposium Commerative 8th Army Bedford Lorry (one of a kind) is even nicer.

This is an impressive list of model airplanes, but I want to re-ask the questions posted earlier:

1. Were all of these Warbirds hand carved wood produced in limited numbers?
2. What year was the last model available for sale at a K&C dealership.

King and Country now specializes in WWII ETO infantry figures and armoured vehicles. However, the outcome of this conflict was decided by Allied strategic bombing, and Allied tactical air superiority. Most German soldiers would later admit that close quarters combat served to delay the inevitable and complete defeat of Nazi Germany.

Certain of the more popular wood warbirds (Spitfire, ME109, Hawker Hurricane, Fokker TriPlane) were produced in fairly large numbers (perhaps as many as 50-100). The vast majority of the planes, however, were produced in very small mumbers, perhaps 5-10, with some having only 1-3 produced. They were last available from dealers fairly recently, with the last listing on a dealer website I can recall being Eddie Richinbacker's Spad on the Old Toy Soldier Home website in 2003 (I bought it). I believe that there are two available from King & Country U.K. right now (not listed on the website, but available). They are, however, due to the poor exchange rate, extremely expensive in American dollars, perhaps twice what they would be if sold on ebay in the U.S.

I am going to Scotland and London this August, but I'm thinking more plane trip than road trip (I can't hold my breath that long). The planes available at K&C, UK from Mike & Sue Neville are a 1/32 scale F104 Starfighter in West German Navy markings, and a 1/48 scale B17 Flying Fortress in the markings "A Bit O'Lace" (the one appearing in the warbirds flyer). I also know a gentleman in Scotland selling a Sopwith Camel and a Fokker Triplane, but he wants a lot of money for them (again, the exchange rate).
