German tank colors can be very confusing. I have a lot of research material, but I still can't determine if either of the King Tigers made by King and Country are appropriate for a Battle of the Bulge Diorama. Does anyone know?

I believe KC displays the original KT (WS 67) in a Battle of the Bulge diorama with the winter tank riders. The second one (WS 71) is a late war paint - so that one probably would be less appropriate for the Bulge. My understanding is that the Germans did not have any uniform paint scheme.

.....Yet Treefrog shows WS67 as a Fall of Berlin vehicle, and WS71 as a vehicle from the last 6 months if the war ,which would include the Bulge. But the research I did shows a color vehicle similar to WS67 at the Bulge ?!?!?!?!?!??!?....

WS 67 was made as part of the Fall of Berlin series, but it works with the Bulge. I have both and like the WS 71 paint scheme better because it is more dramatic. It would be quite a target though in the snow.

Hi Guys,

There some very good sites out there that will give you decent pictures of this tank. The one pictured was captured when the allies closed the Bulge and it has been restored. There is also one at the Patton Museum on Fort Knox Kentucky which is just south of Louisville if any of you are travelling. I have seen the one in Kentucky and its in very good shape. The Tank pictured was captured from Kampf Group Peiper at La Gleize.

In La Gleize alone they abandoned:

47 half-tracks (SPW)
7 Panzer IV
12 Panther G
1 Panther H
6 Tiger II (King Tigers)
6 Bisons (150mm Hows)
3 Puma
1 Flak half-track
2 half track vehicles
4 Russian 120mm mortars
1 Flakpanzer IV
1 Steyr truck
1 Schwimmwagen
1 Ketten-Krad
1 BWM Motor Bike
3 cars (Steyr 1500 A/01)
1 75 mm cannon
1 flak cannon
1 US Jeep (captured and used by the Germans)
1 Dodge (captured and used by the Germans)
1 Dodge ambulance (captured and used by the Germans)
1 truck (type unidentified)

The Tiger II on display outside the La Gleize Museum was one of the six left behind by Kampfgruppe Peiper. This 68 ton tank had a road speed of 35 kmh, and a range of 170 km. It was armed with a 88mm KwK 43, and was protected by 150mm of armour at the front, and up to 185mm on the turret. As such there were few allied guns that could hope to knock it out, and most of those left behind in the Ardennes had either shed a track, broken down or run out of fuel. In La Gleize one of the captured Tiger IIs was used as target practice by US troops once the village had been retaken. They fired bazooka after bazooka round at it - none penetrated!

This one was restored some years ago, the main gun being damaged. It was repainted, but the original tank number, '213' was kept. Vehicle 213 was part of 501st Abteilung, commanded by Dollinger, and was abandoned in front of the town hall. It was moved to its present site in 1951.

I will see if I can find the link to the museums website and post it but I know we have at least one member from Belgium so maybe they will go there and take some pictures with a digital camera and post them for us, especially since there arent too many color photos from the era of this beast.

Dave-
That is a great picture of the King T. I read somewhere that they have a Panther II at Fort Knox. One of the few prototypes that were produced. I would love to see a picture of that.

Hey guys thanks for all of the info. Like I said I have tons of reference books, but the German paint thing is still very confusing. Boy I would like to buy that Winter Tiger they have on Treefrog but at $250 that is a real budget buster. Alex
