Putin’s Myths About the Soviets and World War II[/h][h=2]The Kremlin obscures Stalin’s cooperation with Hitler.[/h]
The final defeat of Nazi Germany 75 years ago closed the bloodiest theater in humanity’s most violent war. Nowhere was the cost of the conflict higher than in the Soviet Union, where at least 26.6 million perished. This year’s Victory Day commemorations in Moscow have been postponed due to Covid-19. Yet even as Russians wait for the chance to honor Russia’s fallen, fresh battles are under way over World War II’s legacy.

As President Vladimir Putin has grown more autocratic at home and adventurous abroad, he has rewritten history for political ends. Within Russian borders, an emphasis on the Soviet war effort helps promote Mr. Putin’s vision of national purpose, justifies autocracy, and distracts from the struggling economy. In international affairs, Mr. Putin describes a Russia threatened by U.S. unilateralism and “expansionist” liberalism, evoking Germany’s 1941 invasion. This provides a historical rationale for aggressive foreign policy in Russia’s near abroad.

Mr. Putin’s version of history depends on two myths: that the Soviet Union started the war on the right side, and that autocracy was necessary to win the war. To align the facts with these fictions, educational reforms have rewritten Russia’s history textbooks. They now provide little detail about Stalinist repression or the Soviet role in the war’s beginnings.

In 2014 Mr. Putin signed a law criminalizing criticism of the Soviet war effort. At an informal Commonwealth of Independent States summit last December, he delivered lengthy remarks on the war’s origins, declaring that “the Soviet Union was trying to the utmost to use every opportunity for establishing an anti-Hitler coalition.” It was “attempting to prevent the outbreak of World War II,” he said, “but it practically remained alone and isolated.” Stalin’s interwar diplomacy aimed only to deter Hitler, he argued.

The record shows otherwise. After victory in World War I, the Allies sought to demilitarize Germany. To avoid Allied inspection teams, the German military formed a secret partnership with the U.S.S.R. in 1922. They established a network of military bases, industrial facilities and research laboratories inside the Soviet Union to rearm both states. There could have been few doubts on the Soviet side about the militaristic intentions of their German partners. On the weapons ranges at their joint bases, officers fired at dummies dressed in Czech and Polish uniforms. German tank prototypes tested in the Soviet Union were carefully designed to fit French and Belgian railway cars. German ambitions became even clearer in 1933, when Hitler became chancellor and accelerated rearmament.

Despite tensions, the two sides renewed their collaboration six years later in the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. Under its terms, they partitioned Eastern Europe. Stalin provided Germany millions of tons of oil, grain and other resources for the war against the U.K. and France. He even hosted a German military base on Soviet soil. Whatever Stalin’s calculus might have been, he helped rearm Germany, then assisted in Hitler’s conquests for two years. That is hardly a narrative Mr. Putin can use at home or abroad.

Stalinist repression failed to improve the security of the U.S.S.R. Beginning in 1937 Stalin decapitated the Red Army, discharging or arresting over 30,000 army officers as the prospect of war grew. The disastrous Soviet invasion of Finland in November 1939 demonstrated the resultant weaknesses in the Red Army and encouraged Hitler’s later invasion. Stalin’s decision to purge his intelligence services, coupled with his stubborn refusal to accept evidence indicating Hitler’s plans to attack the Soviet Union, meant disaster when the German Army launched Operation Barbarossa.

Rewriting history does nothing to honor the sacrifice of millions of Soviet soldiers who gave their lives to defeat Nazi Germany. And, as the seen in the U.S.S.R., historical half-truths aren’t a durable foundation for political order. Mr. Putin would be wise to avoid making history his enemy.

Rut,

Its interesting because in Japan, Japanese World War II atrocities, involvement and or historical figures are not even taught in school. Yet, Putin is trying to rewrite Russia's...wow.

John, it is happening all over, people are rewriting history, just read the New York Times or any other national paper here in the USA when they address the Civil War or quite frankly as you said - ANY Public school education curriculum in the USA. They glaze over the holocaust, glaze over The Civil War, nothing about the Japanese war crimes OR the atrocities committed by China OR Russia. I can say this because I have a son in the system. Every time I have reviewed his US History, all I see is revisionist and apologist history. SO, my point - why is Russia or anyone different?

Sad state.

Hi.
I teach history--abd French--in a public high school and have for over 20 years. Please understand that High school history, especially not on the AP level, is a thin survey established by state departments of education. Students are not mandated to go into that much depth for a number of reasons that I won't get into.
However. I want to calm some of the concerns that some of you may have. For one, kids CAN READ and get an incredible amount of depth on their own. Second,
while I concur with those of you who see the revision efforts across the globe, on the other hand, there is solace to be had. The AP (Advanced Placement)history courses have quite wisely reduced the amount of depth and stress analysis of WHY a document has its version of history. In essence, AP kids are being taught to be critical thinkers, ones that will be less apt to quickly accept one interpretation of history.
I hope this helps.

My son is in AP History and AP across the board, he comes from 2 Grandfathers who were History majors literally. I applaud your efforts, I really do, but in General, It is NOT happening and what they are taught is complete and utter BS. I am sorry to be crass, but it is a reality, I am living it. It is a sad State of affairs and there is no explanation that is plausible as to why it is happening. The only explanation I can ever see is ..........you got it...........PC Bullshot. What other explanation is there? Fortunately, I have a very bright young man who as you indicate CAN READ and he does. He sees things for what they are, but holy smokes, if he ever voiced an interpretation in his current classes, they would cut him off at the knees. IT is not allowed and it is a shame. I don't know how else to post this other than what I stated. Long story short, it is a sad state of affairs.

I concur with your indignation at the lapses in your child's education. That's truly regrettable. Perhaps it is a question of the teacher, because I hit every one of the gaps that your son has not been taught. I have taught AP European History though and for 14 years. This was my first year for AP US History. A really good text is John Merriman's A History of Modern Europe. It has tons of "dirt" from history that kids love!

You are one of the good ones! He has a good teacher who unfortunately is stuck in a bad system. Believe it or not, she has bucked the curriculum and wait for it............she was reported for it.............you just can't make this crap up. It is just flat out sad.

While your situation is not my business, I hope that you don't mind me pointing out that, as a parent, you have the right to complain. I am often surprised at the impact of a parent phone call to an administrator. Worse for them is a conference with an administrator; they really hate that! When my students ran into bureaucratic roadblocks, I used to tell my students about the four "Ms": Mad Mothers Move Mountains. In your case it would be MFMM: Mad Fathers Move Mountains.

Well, you are correct. Actually my relative was the former Superintendent of Schools, my parents were Hall of Fame teachers and principal. Long story short, I come from an educator family with lots of local connections. Unfortunately I live in Maryland and even with all of that connections, history, etc, I can't fight the "Neu PC" crowd. They have basically killed history. Ironically, with all of the MD Civil War history literally on my doorstep, they skip the war completely.

I have complained all the way to the State Superintendent, had several meetings over the years and was politely told to F.O. That is why I probably sound exasperated in my posts about this. I have never given up on something in my entire life, so I continue to be a thorn. Fortunately, my son has had GOOD teachers who understand it is a farce and they do their best. His best one actually as I said was reprimanded over teaching the Holocaust as well as the American Civil War (7th grade). I don't want to elaborate more on the board to the details, but it was ironic for a lot of reasons and I felt terrible for her. She is an award winning teacher and well deserving. It was a real cluster, but it all worked out, the Principal finally stepped in and quashed the hubbub.
