Here's my initial review of Kronprinz WW2 figures to get the word out about them. I've been looking for a figure that was appropriately sized to go with 1/30 scale vehicles from King and Country, Thomas Gunn, Figarti, etc. since figures by these company's are actually too large and when measured out are really more appropriatel labeled as 1/28 scale figures. Other members here have been asking for this as well. First Legion figures fit the bill, but they are very expensive. Thus, I stumbled on to Kronprinz, and I think I have hit on a winner.
Kronprinz is a relatively new company out of Spain. They do WW2 figures (mostly grey German, but with a few Americans, Italians, etc.) among other offerings like Napoleonics.
George from Minuteman Toy Soldiers is the main U.S. dealer, and you can order through the Minuteman website.
My initial thoughts:
- Excellent value. Figures cost $35 for singles.
- Size. They measure just over 60mm from foot to head (ranging 61-63mm on average). They are ever so slightly larger than First Legion Figures. There is variance though, with some figures slightly taller and some slightly shorter. A nice thing, since not all people are the same height. Proportionally they are slender figures with correctly sized rifles (think Thomas Gunn here). The MG34 on a soldier was a little chunkier ala King and Country.
-Paint. Not as "perfect" as FL. More akin to King and Country or Thomas Gunn paint quality, but the matte color tones are darker and blend very well with First Legion.
- Packaging needs work. Comes in plain cardboard boxes with picture of figure and bubble wrap inside. Some figures rifles were bent, but I was able to gently straighten them out without breakage. An area for future improvement.
- Selection Currently limited to grey Germans and LAH SS. I imagine they will continue to expand as they mature as a company. I keep bugging them to make black Uniformed Panzer crew.
My Bottom Line: An excellent/affordable figure that deserves your consideration. They are not as detailed or perfectly painted as First Legion figures, so if you scrutinize them 2 inches from your eye there is a noticeable difference, but when viewed at normal distance, say 8 inches or greater, you can't really see these differences. The Kronprinz helmets and boots are larger than First Legion, but not so much as to be extremely noticeable. I wish I had some grey FL Stalingrad Germans to do a real comparison. They're a great figure to fill out scenes/stretch your collecting dollar, I think. If you like King and Country figures, but like me want them smaller so they are in current scale/proportion to 1/30 vehicles from KC, Thomas Gunn,Figarti, etc., these figures work great.
So far they appear to be pretty versatile figures to me. The sculpts are more akin to King and Country or Thomas Gunn but reduced in size, and the paiting tones/colors skew more towards FL. Honestly, these may be the most versatile figures out there right now.
Here's the kicker: When displayed next to 1/30 vehicles like Figarti or Thomas Gunn, they represent a soldier about 6" in height. When displayed with Collectors Showcase vehicles they look to represent a soldier of 5'6"-5'9" in height. Also reasonable. To me, they look right and work with both sets of vehicles. This is a concept I may have to look at further in the future, as these Kronprinz figures may have hit a sweet spot in size/proportionality, and for those of us concerned with correct size relations between figures and vehicles, may work with all the major manufacturers pro
Now for the pictures. I threw them in with vehicles from Honour Bound, King and Country, Collectors Showcase, and Figarti to give you a general impression. A First Legion Waffen SS/Winter Officer, Thomas Gun Luftwaffe, and some King and COuntry Afrikakorps figures were thrown in to give reference. Close up pictures were taken from approximately 6" away. Other pictures ranged in distance from 10-18 inches away.
