158 years ago today, Union forces began to retreat back towards the town of Gettysburg; units from the famed Iron Brigade along with units from PA to their left and right made a last stand in front of the Lutheran Seminary as Confederate troops from Heth's Division advanced on their position.

i thought u loved me poems

The Iron Brigade began to fall back towards Cemetery Hill along with the rest of 1st Corps, they would take up positions along the far left flank of Culps Hill for the remainder of the battle.

Their sacrifice on the first day bought the rest of the Union Army time to get to the field and take up a strong defensive position from Culps Hill around and down Cemetery Ridge to the Round Tops..............they took about 80% casualties on the first days fighting and were never the same as a fighting force again.

why you poem

you are my only one poem

Thus began the greatest battle in the American Civil War, it raged for three days in this quiet PA town and decided the outcome of the war; the stone wall along Cemetery Ridge became the high water mark of the Confederacy, never again would then get this far north and for the next two years, they would fight a defensive war in hopes of a peace treaty that never came.

When I was a young boy, I discovered the American Heritage book on The Battle of Gettysburg, on the cover, in the center and the front and rear inside covers were images of the iconic Gettysburg Panorama, this launched a life long interest in the American Civil War, I had the trip of my life as a 12 year old when myself and my family traveled to Gettysburg for the first time, it was an incredible experience as a kid to be on that battlefield.

I've been to Gettysburg countless times since, every American should visit this battlefield to fully understand what happened there and the sacrifices both sides made fighting a war that in reality was a true tragedy on a grand scale.

Wow!!!!!

Unbelievable scale, you give a real sense to the enormity of the event. Love the layout.

Beauty of a set up, George. Massive and impressive and one of my favorite actions at Gettysburg. Who can't be impressed by the bloody shootout between the Iron Brigade and the 26th North Carolina? Casualties were incredibly high and the desperate action became all but lost in the gore of the 2 following days, but that first day is hard to beat for valor and sacrifice. Reynolds should have kept his head down... -- Al

Thanks Al.....................The Iron Brigade were boyhood heroes of mine, as the saying goes, they left it all on the field..............

Once again a labour of love, beyond impressive :salute:: , Robin.

Thanks Robin; with these layouts, sometimes they work/come together, other times they just don't for whatever reason.

I'm really happy with this one, glad you like it too...................

George mate,
Bloody Outstanding cobber. Another master piece from the Master. I throughly enjoyed viewing each photo. Keep up the great work.

Cheers from the Land Down Under, Howard:salute::

George,

Fantastic thread! About 10 years ago Tim Tyler inspired me to take my first trip to Gettysburg, which was with my family. My then 5 year old son and I took the first or countless battlefield tours from one of the incredibly knowledgeable Battlefield Guides. Since then I have returned to Gettysburg several times, taking at least 2 guided tours on various subjects or aspects of the battle on each visit. Walking the ground really brings home the herosism and sacrifices of the men who hallowed that ground with their blood. This thread has inspired me to take a trip their with my son this summer, now that we are vaccinated and this Covid mess is on the decline.

Thanks Louis; one of the highlights of my show journeys over the years is one year while doing the Gettysburg show, I saw Tim Tyler in the crowd, TOTALLY unexpected.

He and I had dinner that night and before dinner, we went into a book shop in town, we were browsing around and some kid was working the counter.

Tim walks up to him and says "Can you tell me where the section of books is on how the Confederates won the Battle of Gettysburg?"..................;)...............the kid looked at him and didn't know whether to **** or wind his watch, so he says "I'm sorry sir, I'm not familiar with that section".............so Tim says "Yeah, sadly, no, I'm not either".......................I died laughing.

I am glad you and your son enjoy going there, my suggestion is to go in the Fall, the weather is nice and cool and it's not as crowded, plus the leaves are down from the trees and you can really see the battlefield much better.............................

Another fantastic layout George. Great scale to do these kinds of setups.

Wow George.....I haven't been to Gettysburg yet (i'm planning on it) but maybe I only need to go to your basement and see this wonderful display!!!

The building looks very authentic and the entire layout is a sight to behold!!

Thanks for sharing this with us. I am always taken back by your large and massive set ups. Very impressive to say the least!

Always nice to hear from you Chuck, hope you are doing well.

I post images of my layouts on various FB pages; I got a private message once from some random guy who wanted to open a museum and he wanted to feature a number of my layouts, he said he'd do tours of the museum and describe to the people each battle and I could sell my toy soldiers in the gift shop.

I admire his creativity, but I'll stick to doing my layouts for me and selling toy soldiers without a gift shop.....................:wink2:
