Last WW1 veteran passes away (1 Viewer)

110!! hard to believe what he saw in his life. I remember a documentory where he remarked on his life and said if he could do it again he would change nothing; a great epitaph.

A unique generation of people

A sad day. I salute them all. A truly great generation gone now. I wish WW1 was more appreciated here in the USA.:( -- Al

The last lion has gone. Let's use this as a reminder to appreciate and comemorate WWII veterans while they are still with us.

Indeed, for before we know it they will have passed away as well and we will we only have books and film to remind us.

There has been a big 3 page spread in our local newspaper today, as Claude Choules was a resident of Western Australia, coming here after WW1 and making it his home.

Born in Britain and raised in Wyre Piddle, Mr Choules joined the Royal Navy in 1915 at 14.

He settled in Fremantle after he was seconded to the Royal Australian Navy in 1926 and is recognised as the only living veteran who served in both world wars.

Blind and almost totally deaf, Mr Choules "hated war" and only marched in Anzac Day parades when he was ordered to.

Mr Choules recorded many of the twists and turns of his long life in his autobiography The Last of the Last.

Lest we forget.

Requiescat In Pace

J'avais un camarade,
De meilleur il n'en est pas;
Dans la paix et dans la guerre
Nous allions comme des frères
: Marchant d'un même pas. :
2. Mais une balle siffle.
Qui de nous sera frappé?
Le voilà qui tombe à terre,
Il est là dans la poussière;
: Mon cœur est déchiré. :

3. La main il veut me tendre
Mais je charge mon fusil;
Adieu donc, adieu mon frère
Dans le ciel et sur la terre
: Restons toujours unis. :

WHy has there been no media coverage in other countries than Australia?!?!?!{eek3}^&confuse{sm0} This is a milestone in history; there are no more people in the world who fought in the First World War!
Such a pity,
Sandor:salute::

A funeral will be held today in Perth for World War I veteran Claude Choules.

Mr Choules was the world's last known veteran who saw active service in both world wars.

He died in a Perth nursing home earlier this month aged 110.

Mr Choules' daughter Anne Pow says she has been overwhelmed by the support from friends, the Navy and the community.

"I've had some very lovely cards from people I haven't seen for many years but also from people I've never known," she said.

"So people are touched by his story and our story too and we appreciate their interest."

A public naval service will be held in Fremantle this morning.

Ms Pow says it will be a joyous occasion.

"There's a lot of celebration in it because he had such a wonderful life and he was such an important member of the family, a patriarch you might say of our family," she said.

"But you can't keep people forever. He did get to 110."
