LoA to be shown on Turner Classic Movies, Friday, July 18, at 8pm EST. Followed by Gallipoli at midnight and then Grand Illusion at 2am. At 4am is a showing of King and Country starring Bogarde and Courtenay. It has been ages since I saw this one, but 4am is tough. Still, might have to set my alarm. Great War movies all night. -- Al

Great cinematography and great performances, but I can't watch this movie and not think about the Arab world, in light of events that have taken place since the movie was made, and also, in light of thinking how ignorant we were, generally, of the history of the Arabs in the Arabian peninsula and in the Middle East, from the late 1800's up to 1914. It's always in the back of my mind, somewhere.

Prost!

Al, you may want to use Watch TCM. You can watch movies for up to toe weeks after they air. You need an account with one of the cable providers so you can log in and watch.

Don't have a Blu Ray but thinking of getting one. Can you play the HD DVDs on Blu Ray?

No, sorry. Toshiba abandoned the HD DVD format in February 2008, and essentially no manufacturer was interested
in making their product dual capable.

JAZZ,

YOU MUST GET BLU-RAY! I got the LOFA Special "Super Secret" Deluxe Edition Box set with all of the extras at Costco last summer and it is AWESOME! The imaging in incredible and the extras are out of sight. There is a book, like 3 different DVD's, and all kinds of stuff! And since LOA is one of my all time favorite movies I had to get it.

You will be opened up to a new world of movies when you get BLU-RAY Jazz.

It must be done.

I have a $50 AMEX card you can have if times are tough to donate to your plight.

Have to agree with the guys on the Bluray format as watching Lawrence in Arabia on BR compared to all the other formats is literally an event. When this movie was released on BR awhile back I was tasked by Stack magazine to write an article on the background to the making of the movie and following diligent research dug up some interesting stuff here's the link if anyone's interested

Ironically O'Toole was not originally cast as Lawrence as the role had been taken by Albert Finney. His first dress rehearsal takes absolutely wowed David Lean. However, Finney refused to sign a seven year contract which came with the deal and so bowed out. A bereft Lean was beside himself until one of his minions told him to take a look at an actor called O'Toole-who was subsequently cast in the role albeit Lean's second choice.

Bob,

You have talked me into it as Lawrence is one of my favorite movies, if not favorite. I had no idea about Finney and I think he would have been good in the role. Brando I cannot see but more than 50 years later O'Toole is typeset into our imagination and it's hard at this late date to envision anyone else.

I enjoyed your review, as I do all of yours; always packed full of information. I also discovered your History of Hollywood series and am planning to read that.

One of my favorite scenes and one that really sets the mood is when Lawrence shows the other soldiers his match burning trick. Marvelously executed.

While the alternates are also good actors, I think Peter O'Toole most closely resembled el-Auruns the most.

It's interesting to read his memoirs, too, "Seven Pillars of Wisdom", and see where the film diverges a little, as most films based on books need must.

I confess, I still have this only on VHS! (*gasp!*) I haven't gotten around to replacing it yet with a digital copy. Same goes for "Barry Lyndon", which I really want to replace with a disc.

Prost!

Jazz,

Yo! Why does Bob get all the credit for making the Blu-ray sale, I'm the one who brought up LOA and the extras!!! LOL!!! Anyway, another classic with loads of extra's is Dr. Zhivago. Oh my God, the back story on Zhivago is incredible. For example, Omar Sharif had some sort of tape pulling his face and eyebrows back to give him a different look in the film for his to pass as a Russian. Also, you have to see "The Sand Pebbles", "Papillion" and "Cool Hand Luke" in Blu-Ray! The are so much more crisper in quality and sound. The back story on the "The Last Emperor" is phenomenal.

Bob, great article brother! Keep writing on the classics!

For those of you who have Blu Ray, any recommendation on a player?

I have an OPPO-93 Region Free I got from here A bit pricey, but the best thing to do is set a budget of what you want
to pay and then go shopping---Costco, Amazon, BestBuy and so on. Some of them have a variety of bells and whistles you'll
never use. 3D for example. Internet connection, but your DirecTV does that. You can get a great deal for under $100--SONY,
LG, Panasonic. LG has come a long way and Costco has them. Love Costco's return policy. Consider how much space you have.
The OPPO is big and heavy. Others are thin and light.

I personally hate Samsung anything. Their warranty sucks and is a big pain.
