LCVP question (1 Viewer)

When I was at the West Coaster, there was a stunning diorama featuring the loading of troops onto transports for D-Day. (I think that was the diorama that everyone was asking - will K&C be selling that crane?). I can't find it or I'd link to a picture.

Anyway, I seem to recall a landing craft that held 1 or 2 tanks. Was this the LCVP, or a yet-to-be-released landing craft?

It would appear that it's a new boat, not the LCVP. I was just wondering whether a tank wound fit in the LCVP, meaning K&C had understated it's carrying capacity.

I'm hoping the new boat it's something still in the pipeline and not a one-of-a-kind prototype.

An LCVP could not carry a Sherman tank, just a jeep and trailer or other small vehicle. The larger boat with the Sherman looks like an LCM (3) Landing Craft Mechanized which could carry a 30 ton Sherman.

As Phantom stated the LCVP could carry about 32 men or a jeep and trailer. The LCM could carry one tank, the larger LCT (Landing Craft Tank) as done by Figarti could carry 4+ medium tanks (capacity varied with the sub-type).

Stryker - "Is it USMC compatible?" The LCVP was used in HUGE numbers in the Pacific as well as Europe and the Med. Army and Marine troops debarked from LCVPs all through the war. The LVT was expensive and limited so usually just the first assault waves had the tractors, the others came ashore from various landing craft, including LCVPs.

For DDay and other operations the landing craft carried the number of their parent ship plus their individual number as mentioned by Michael in;

So the number should match a ship that was actually in the operation you are interested in, or just paint the hull in Navy "Ocean Gray".
