Learning History from a Toy Soldier. (1 Viewer)

The idea of the Indians as "Vanishing Americans" was also responsible for the work of artists such as George Catlin, Karl Bodmer, and Seth Eastman described in this thread. These artists acted like ethnographers in trying to record the appearance and customs of individual tribes. Below is a painting by Eastman entitled "Chippewa Indians Playing Checkers" showing the encroachment of western culture into tribal society. The soldiers at Fort Snell often participated in that cultural influence.
