Lessons on Casting (3 Viewers)

My melting pot holds 160 pounds of alloy and the crud that rises to the top I scoop out with my big ladle.Someone said it was called DROSS. I call it crud.Yes, whatever impurities will surface. Do you add some of the waxy flux each time you melt your alloy?

I havent had anything explode - yet.Not even any burns - knock knock.Big bottle of aloe vera standing by.
And yes, I use welders gloves to wield the big ladle and a pair of safety glasses.I have a lether apron but havent used it.Bought it and it just hangs there with my carhart jacket!

Last mold I made was for my Russian flags. I drilled out the bottom for the standard on 4 castings, inserted piano wire, made the mold.

Ddidnt cut vents to the standard for pouring.I just cut the wire to lenth and set them in the mold cavity. Under pressure in the centrifuge they are held in place and now I can spin 4 flags with wire standards cast in. Much faster!

Fubs,

Nothing like tempting fate.
I can see the ER report now...
Casualty admitted to ER complaining of headache, with 4 x 1/32 scale Stars and Stripe standards embedded in forehead. :p

Well there is a nice safety feature built into the fuge. Theres a limit switch attatched to the lid.Try and lift the lid to watch it go round and round and machine turns off.
I'm certain I can bypass it but why? Oh, I know, overfill mold so when it spins you get lots of 600 degree metal spinning out of top of mold and onto inside walls of centrifuge. If I bypass the limit switch safety feature I could watch all this maybe I could get sprayed with molten alloy! I think I'll avoid that. Not an explosian but a good canister/shotgun effect.

No cats climbing in there either when the lids open.Too tempting to give them a ride.

One day, curiosity will get the better of you. You'll just HAVE to see what goes on inside. :D

As I read that, I couldn't help but wonder of the curse words that go with melting metal touching skin. Mike.

Hi Guys, just wondering when we'll be seeing any photos of what you been doing and collecting lately and adding it to the Diorama Thread. Fubar you've done a great job giving instructions on casting along with K.V. who I know is painting like crazy to send support to The Drift. Wish I had the talent for casting. By the way have you decided to take your Zulu Playset out of retirement, Tim sent me a photo of yours highlighting you set up of it. I've missed seeing your Nap photos. Dave you've started taking photos have you any ready to post yet and Wraith have you any photos to post of what you have. Seems like a picture is worth a thousand words and I know like others we'd enjoy your photo........Joe (aka The Lt.)

Ask an ye shall recieve. Had to take some pix before all this gets put away. All re set back up into approximate positions from the wargame last week where I had my Eagle plucked and boiled. All the metal cav and most of the infantry and guns were all put away so I used mostly plastics for the french.See, Plastics are inferior!Thats my story.

Yes, LT the ZUlU stuf is locked away along with most of my playsets. Chain reaction.Remodeling, stuf gets moved making me move more, and more and more. One side of my table is so crammed with stuf from the house I cant get at much of the table for a different display. Was sculpting{ sort of} on some ACW figs, looking thru Trioni artbook, Timelife Uniroms and equipment of the Civil war . No room to play! Next week the house should be back in order.
Wifes out tonite. Could cover the living room floor with Antietam or such?HMMM?

Fubar never get tired of those pics.

I think I am going to switch to pewter. I just had a great session with a cleaner unplugged pot and new pewter and shazam! Lots of great figures and less defects. Less toxic stuff to worry about. I also bought more clamps to keep the molds together. Now to find ACW molds. Any one have any Zouave molds? Pics and stuff later. Very tired fal

Thanks Fubar for spending the time taking the photos. Looking at the photos, for plastics the French look good and I never would have known the difference. It's amazing how well a $1.00 to $2.00 well painted plastic looks when facing a $10.00 to $30.00 metal figure. Looking for more photos as time goes by................The Lt.

Great setup Fubar, I agree with the Lt., you can't tell the difference. Good painting conquers all I guess. I don't get that War, but I must say, they had colorful uniforms. I do enjoy the large battle setups. The best is, charging calvary. Mike.
