Clive took Howard, Jenny, Ed and I to Portsmouth, to see the first Iron clad, Henry VIII's sunken flagship the Mary Rose, and of course, the HMS Victory. All three ships were fascinating, but of course Victory, Nelson and Trafalger being so important historically, I focused on it. Attached are two photos of HMS Victory:

I remember seeing the Victory when I was very young and went to England. I would love to go back one day!
Now, on a quick side note:
Not to be a rivet counter (but more in the vain of giving national credit where it is due), the first ironclad was La Gloire, from France. The Warrior was the first British ironclad and the first iron-hulled warship.
I remember this because the HMS Warrior was the first historical thing I ever researched online!

Thanks for posting these pics. I am still a little surprised at how opulent Nelson's cabin is, even though it probably is not all that different from similar ships of the period.

Thanks for posting Louis, glad you guys had such a good trip during your time over here. The Victory is a beauty isn't she, been several times during my life from the age of about seven upwards and she never fails to impress. When you stand on the deck and look up at her rigging or stand on the gun deck and imagine what it was like during a battle down there makes you realize what a hard life it was on board in those days.{sm2}

Cheers mate

Thanks Louis,
The Victory is a great visit - I saw it in '76 and will always remember the Naval Rating who did the guiding - everything was a flogging offence - a wonder anyone survived.

Same here, I remember him telling us about a ' Flogging round the Fleet' which must have been a hideous experience{eek3}

Last time we went to Portsmouth, the evening before we were watching "Master and Commander". It enhanced the whole visit even more.
