I have looked into buying some real sand from Omaha from a frenchman who lived nearby the beach site, but how do I know it's not from his backyard?? one day in my life I'll get tothe Omaha beach site in person, but for now is there anyone that knows how to find real authentic Omaha beach sand?? ...Sammy

Sammy,

Does this Frenchman live in Normandy near one of the beaches? What is the town he's from? If it's one of the towns near the beaches, I would assume it's genuine. Also, does it have to be from Omaha or could it be one of the other beaches?

His address is in Normandy, but I have nothing to prove it's authentic, as fas as the sand goes if it came from any of the beach landings that would be o.k. I just figured there would be a private company with legal rights or some tight of authenticity to go by, my father came ashore on D-Day+3, and I have just always wanted to own a jar or display in my soldier room.

Easy for me to say but maybe you just have to trust him. How did you find him?

I pulled up a chat line form Normandy France, jumped into a conversation room, found a english speaking gent and started talking to him about the beaches, hey brad are there any guys on the forum close to the beaches??

Sammy,

Not that I know of but there are various English guys and Dutch guys, who, you never know, may get to Normandy from time to time.

Sammy: I have been to the beaches and its more small pebbles then sand!

Also when the tide is out you have to cross a hugh area of these little

pebbles I would estimate 500 to 1000yards which I found unbelievable!

Nothing to compair it to here in the US!

I would recommend looking on Ebay, I'm sure you will find several people

selling it, and you can check their feedback and contact them so you know

what you are getting.:)

I wanted some sand from Iwo Jima and I found two nice sellers that were

able to provide me with all I needed!

Inspite of what some folks say.....you can find nice people, and nice items on

Ebay.:)

One of my good customers traveled to France several years ago and brought back sand from Utah and Omaha beaches for me; the sand is different from each beach for sure like John said, I am fortunate to have both of these samples, good luck with your search...........

I am very lucky to have volcanic dust from Iwo Jima and sand from Saipan, both sent to me by Harlen Glenn

Cheers

Martyn:)

I actually looked on ebay yesterday but didn't see anything.

Thanks Rob, that would be awesome!!!!!!! maybe you could get you a couple buckets and make a dollar on e-bay, I'm really surprised someone on e-bay isn't making a bundle on it. thanks again...Sammy

Maybe it's me, but I find it troubling that anyone would sell sand from Omaha Beach or from Iwo Jima; two very sacred places where thousands of Americans were killed protecting your right to peddle sand. Taking sand from there as a momento is one thing; selling it just seems a bit out in left field.

It would be like me taking a bunch of rocks from Little Round Top and peddling them on Ebay; and how would you the buyer be able to verify if the sand did in fact come from Omaha Beach?

Oh well..........

Thats one way to look at it, another is folks able to get the material are

providing it to folks that would like it.

I haven't seen anyone "getting rich" off these items.:)

The fellows selling Iwo Jima sand all appear to be Marines stationed in the

area and able to visit once a year when we are allowed:confused:

I haven't really looked at the occasional person selling "pebbles" from

Normandy but since the beacheads were over 80 miles long and they are

open to the public.......it would be a simple matter to collect whatever

someone wanted to.

I have visited the entire American sector my Mothers first husband died there

on D-day, it really was a sacrifice those men made that day.

Understood; glad you were able to get over there John, every American should make the trip there and to Gettysburg, two hallowed grounds......................

George, I'm not incouraging anyone to sell sand or anything from any battle site, what I was saying is I'm not surprised someone isn't doing it...Sammy

Both my samples from Iwo and Saipan were gifts from Harlan, he didn't sell me any.

Sammy,
My comments weren't directed towards you; my comments were more towards the fact that people sell sand on Ebay, I find it way out in left field to sell sand from those two places. As you said, people will sell anything these days to make a fast buck.............
