The US CANNOT make light and affordable weapons systems. The USAF was going to have a "hi-low" mix of acft during the height of the Cold War in the 1970s. A limited number of F-15s would gain air superiority, and a low tech fighter, the F-16, would be fielded in greater numbers for point defense against a large Warsaw Pact air fleet. Instead, we got a "hi/hi" mix with smaller numbers as the USAF would not invest in a lower tech acft.
