WOW450 Lockheed Ventura

The Lockheed Ventura was a bomber and patrol aircraft of World War II, used by United States and British Commonwealth forces in several guises. Developed from the Lockheed Model 18 Lodestar transport, as a replacement for the Lockheed Hudson bombers then in service with the RAF. Used in daylight attacks against occupied Europe, they proved to have weaknesses and were removed from bomber duty and were then used for patrols by Coastal Command.

American Ventura’s saw service as a bomber, a night fighter and would lead B-24 bomber formations, since they were equipped with radar. The Ventura
was first delivered to US Forces in December 1942, and entered regular service in February 1943. The first squadron in combat was VP-135, deployed in the Aleutian Islands in April 1943. They were operated by three other squadrons in this theatre. From the Aleutians, they flew strikes against bases Japanese islands in the Kurile chain.

Thomas Gunn have created the aircraft flown by VP-133 and based out of Tinian in the last year of the war. The whole squadron carried the octopus tentacles around the turret. The squadron flew 400 miles (640 km) sector searches to the west and southwest of Tinian and conducted frequent reconnaissance flights to Caroline island group and raided by-passed Japanese bases including Truk. In 23 March 1945 a detachment of six aircraft was sent to Iwo Jima to spearhead attacks against Japanese picket boats guarding the approaches to the home islands. The heavily armed picket boats served as Japan's early warning system to give the Japanese air defense command notice of incoming raids by B-29 aircraft.
Lieutenant (JG) Wilson was the first squadron pilot to tangle with these vessels, sinking one and damaging another. Both he and his co-pilot, Ensign McCarthy, were so badly wounded by AA fire in the attack that the plane captain, AMM 1c Henry M. Sandler, had to take over the controls and fly the damaged Ventura back to Iwo Jima.

WOW449 Vought Kingfisher

The Vought Sikorsky OS2U Kingfisher was a catapult launched observation floatplane that could also operate on fixed, wheeled, taildragger landing gear. The Kingfisher first flew on March 1[SUP]st,[/SUP]1938, and operated from battleships and heavy cruisers, as well as being land-based. In WW2 the kingfisher was the US main shipboard observation plane and there were around 1500 examples manufactured. The Kingfisher also saw service with the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy, the Royal Australian Air Force, and the Soviet Navy, with 2 aircraft on the ship USS Milwaukee (Murmansk).

The Kingfisher had a variety of roles, scouting and observation, sub-hunting, rescue and guiding naval gunfire. it was armed with one forward firing and a rear-firing M1919 Browning MG [0.30in/7.62mm] and could be armed with bombs or depth charges [650llb/295kg].

It was a compact mid-wing monoplane, with a large central float and small stabilizing floats. At sea the Kingfisher was launched by the ship's catapult, the aircraft were recovered using a sea sled towed just below the surface and played out in waters smoothed by the ship's wake. The aircraft would land in the wake, taxi to the sled and engage it with a small hook on the bottom of the float before being craned aboard.

Our 1/30 hand carved Mahogany wood version comes with a free landing jetty terrain mat, is limited to 5 in number worldwide and is priced at $899 plus postage.

WOW447 Horten Ho.229

The Horten Ho.229 was a German prototype heavy jet fighter designed by Walter Horten during the closing stages of WW2. It was the first flying wing jet fighter and its design has been emulated in a variety of post war fighters notably in the USA.

The design was a response to Herman Goring’s request for a bomber capable of meeting the 3 x 1000 requirement; namely to be able to travel 1000 Kilometres, carrying 1000 Kilos of bombs at 1000 KMH. A glider prototype was built and flown, 2 more prototypes were built with one of them undertaking several test flights before crashing and killing the test pilot. The 3rd prototype was not fully completed and captured by US forces at the end of the war, it now rests in the Smithsonian Museum under waiting restoration.

Our latest 1/30 scale version 'Red 13' is armed with air to air missiles, is limited to 4 in number worldwide and is priced at $750 plus postage.

The figures and accessories are shown for scale comparison purposes only and are not included.

march warbirds 1.jpg

Dear all, welcome to our March 2023 Aircraft newsletter featuring a small selection of our latest warbirds. We have just had delivery of some exciting new additions, which will be making an appearance in the near future.

All our hand carved Mahogany aircraft take in the region of 250 days to manufacture plus many more hours of drying time. For this reason we only make small numbers of each model and every aircraft is a unique piece.

For those of you who wish to spread your budget when buying our aircraft, please note we do accept stage payments where you can spread the cost over several months. If you require further details of any of the aircraft in today's newsletter, please email
welcome@gunnclub.co.uk and ask for a quote.

A big thank you to Mark Dyer and others with their assistance in the research and development of these models, it really has been invaluable.

All our aircraft now come with their own stands and can be displayed in flying mode if required.

Some neat releases again this month!

And it looks like my HO-229 model should arrive by Friday… I’m excited to add that to my collection as it’s one of my favorite Luftwaffe/Luft ‘46 aircraft 😎

This is my favourite March Plane. Yet, it would cost me around 1.500,- € to arrive at my door. This amount of money will get me this:

Nope it would work out at 850 Euros to your door, leaves you spare Euros after conversion for a bicycle and she will thank you for the fitness - possibly!

Yep even though it eats into our TS Budget, one of the things us Uncles end up saving the day doing !
