I think your statement Gary about old time collectors getting tired of the hobby may be true for some but not all. I'm still enjoying it; I've just changed my focus. Instead of buying WW II, which no longer interests me from a collecting point of view -- how many tanks can you have -- I'm collecting First Legion Naps and enjoying it a lot, especially finding out about an era of which I knew little.

I think my collection being so random is what keeps me interested. It keeps me always on the hunt for weird and different stuff rather than just waiting for the next figure painted olive drab to come out!

Plus, who you calling an old timer! ^&grin

I found it interesting reading UCLA's post that his best year with $6000 in sales was 2009. 2009 was the height of the great recession. My point being, and this is generally speaking, if your in this hobby your doing OK financially. I think the problem now is old time collectors, me included, are getting a little tired of the hobby. One being way to much product. I personally don't know how some companies are still around. The secondary market is dead unless you price the item so for below retail people just can't pass it up. We will never see the likes of the middle 2000's, those were the glory years.

Hey Gary ... I am relatively still new to the Toy Soldier Hobby, (maybe 11 or 12 years), but, like Brad, I am still really enthusiastic about my collection. Maybe it is the hunt for a missing figure, or a new sculpt or possibly a novelty item I see walking by a table or in a trading room.

Andy and K&C really lit a fire under me with their newest Japanese Naval series and NOW .. ^&grin .. the Corsair, pilots and Marines.

Another point I would like to bring up is the trade off of between $$$$ and the hobby itself that so many folks like to fret over. IF any ..."collector"... enters the hobby looking to make a profit or even break even, I am afraid that they will be in for a disappointment. There are very few hobbies that actually turn a profit; and most of those I have a hard time calling them hobbies.

I was a military collector many years ago. At first it was just a hobby and it filled my need for being close to history. Then I (somehow) got pushed into being a dealer. I found that after a few years it was no longer FUN or a hobby and it became more of a worrisome business. That's when I got out.

For me Toy Soldiers is more about the hunt for figures, being on this forum, road trips to shows with the "Famous Minuteman" himself, and the good times meeting other folks (like you Gary and Brad) with my interest. We have had some good laughs the last few years in Chicago!

I am looking forward to seeing you again this year.
Happy Collecting

I was told by a seller...that he was informed that attendance this year was a little slow...something in the 250-300 range...

I still love going to OTSN and meeting and BSing with everyone I,ve met through the years. I think my wayning interest in soldiers has to do with my other hobby, collecting NHL jerseys. That has definetly jumped to #1 and it don't lead to having extra money for soldiers. But as Brad said how many sherman tanks at $200 a pop can you have?
I never got into this hobby to resell and make money, never. But one will have to admit it was nice back a few years ago to know that if you wanted to sell you could double and triple your money.
Gary

The key is finding something that interests you and changing collecting interests when necessary. Of course, if you're happy with what you're collecting, that's fine too. In my case, I just had more and more of the same and lost the sense of excitement when a new set came in. If you don't get out of that rut, then you probably won't stay too much longer in the hobby.

I am sorry to say that I was manning my tables solo, so I didn't get the opportunity to take any photos. Tom Dubel was indeed there, but I didn't see him, or anyone else for that matter unlike previous years, taking photos or videos. Some of the manufacturers who were there included King & Country (without Andy), Britains, Collectors Showcase, Frontline, and Bill Hocker, among others. Dealers were also there selling Little Legion, John Jenkins Design, First Legion, etc.

I didn't participate in room trading this year, but I heard that foot traffic was light with some saying they did well while others not so much. I don't know if they announced attendance numbers, but I do know that there were 165 vendor tables sold. My best year at the show was 2009 with more than $6,000 in sales, unfortunately, this was my worst year with less than $1,000. That being said, I intend to return next year because it is much more about seeing old friends and supporting the hobby than the money. Heck, if it was about the money, I would be the dumbest MBA that the UCLA Graduate School of Management every awarded a diploma to.

Some news on the West Coaster's future going forward: This was the last year on the long running West Coaster contract with the Marriott. Craig and Woody are trying to find a new venue for 2017. One place they are negotiating with is the Lyon Air Museum on the other side (west) of John Wayne Airport as opposed to the Marriott which is east of the airport. If successful, it would be the end of room trading, but they might be able to run it as a two day show on Saturday and Sunday. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Mike

I spoke with a few collectors who said that they would not attend the show if it is in a location that did not allow for room trading etc. I also spoke with a couple of dealers who said that it is a logistical nightmare for them to have a show where they are in one location while the show is in another location. There are no hotels within walking distance of the Lyon Air Museum and parking is extremely limited.

I for one hope it stays at the Marriott.

Jason mate,
I for one would not travel 10,000 miles from the Land of OZ for a show that did not have three or four days of room trading before the actual Sunday show. I have found with 2 West Coasters and 3 Chicago Shows under my belt that the lead up to the Sunday of room trading, meeting new and old mates, long TS chats and dining each night with collectors , dealers and manufacturers is far more important than the main show on the Sunday. Picking up a bargain or trying to beat my good Texan mate Carlos to it, is also great fun.
It is a real worry that if numbers are not coming thru the door then sales would be down and Dealers will reconsider their participation in upcoming shows.
I still have very fond memories of my first U.S. Show in 2010, The West Coaster, where a lonely "Boy from OZ" was befriended by your good self and Mark (Beaufighter) and shown the ropes around the Show. Once again many thanks.
Cheers from the Land Downunder, Howard

Mike, The Texas Show could hit 1,000 this year ! I believe last year's attendance was close to the 700 - 800 Range

Wayne...

really...that many...

I love that show...
it has turned into a mini vacation for me...
the absolute perfect spot and time for a family vacation where dad can get his toy soldier fix on...
and the family has plenty of other stuff to do......

Memorial Day weekend...
sunny climate...
in the absolute dead center heart of the city...
next door to the biggest tourist attraction in the state of Texas...the Alamo
the Menger Hotel's historical accommodations...
King & Country's Kings X store right in the lobby...
2 blocks from the Riverwalk...
100 restaurants within a 5 minute walk...
shuttles everywhere...
Andy (K&C) does a complimentary meet and greet...
beer...wine and snacks...
the K&C dinner symposium...
the gigantic 3 level River Center Mall attached to the Menger Hotel...
literally 20 steps from the Menger's side door...

just so much stuff that a family can do...

both Duke and Brian drive/fly regularly quite a distance for that show...

I know when I went to Chicago...the West Coaster and Hackensack...
their venues/hotels offered nothing in attractions like the Texas Show...

it's quite unique and has something for the entire family...

Keep talking like that Mike and I'll be tempted to make that 22 hour drive to the show so I can unload my van in 1000% humidity.............

Or not.................:wink2:

I drove the 2 day trip to the Texas show 6 years ago. Stayed at the Mengar. You know how much time I spent at the actual show? 4 hours. The rest of the time was doing other things in and around San Antonio. My personal opinion. Make it a vacation with a soldier show just one of the attractions. Completely different from Chicago where it's soldiers 24 - 7. My only negatives, no room trading and at least the weekend we went it was HOT!!!!
Gary

Chicago and Hackensack are not really comparable to San Antonio, which isn't exactly a large city. The Chicago Show is not even in Chicago. Otherwise, it would blow the Texas Show away for events, etc. I've been to conventions in Chicago, negotiated deals in Chicago and there's nothing like Chicago. A city I'd love to live in. San Antonio is more of an event. Hackensack is just a show, albeit a big one but a one day show.

George...

you live in Taunton right?

about 10 miles from the Atlantic Ocean right?

I'm guessing a nice salty breeze in the air year around right?

look at these charts of yearly humidity levels in Texas and Massachusetts...

pretty similar...

you're as humid as we are..even more so in the morning hours...

https://www.currentresults.com/Weather/Massachusetts/humidity-by-month.php
https://www.currentresults.com/Weather/Texas/humidity-annual.php

Massachusetts is referred to as a humid continental climate...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_Massachusetts

treat the Texas show as a vacation...

fly yourself and your girlfriend...put all your clothes in one carry-on bag...
take 50 pounds of toy soldiers in your other carry-on...

check in 2 more 50 pound bags of toy soldiers free...

that's 150 pounds of toy soldiers...

get 2-3 tables...you can handle that yourself easily...

take it easy and have some fun...

a mini vacation...

Mike,
Sorry brother, comparing MA to TX as far as humidity is apples to hand grenades. I've been to Texas four times, each time was hotter than the last. I had a friend who lived in Horseshoe Bay TX, visited her in May and man, it was Africa hot and humid, like a mile from the sun hot and humid. Going from her house to the car was an adventure, boiling hot, just really uncomfortable.

Here in MA, we get spells during the Summer of the three H's; hazy, hot and humid, they last a few days, then thunderstorms roll through and things cool off.

San Antonio is an awesome city, loved the river walk area, her and I had a ball.

I wish the show, the promoter, the attendees and the vendors all the luck in the world.

I agree Mike. The Texas show is a great one with a lot to offer besides just toy soldiers. The times my family and I have been we've treated it like a mini vacation like yourself. I hope we can return this year, but will have to see if that works out for us.

George...

don't confuse heat with humidity...

two different things...

the high/low average in San Antonio in May is 67-87 degrees...

is that really what you consider "Africa hot"?

you're a funny guy...

by the way...

Texas has come a long way...

we have indoor air conditioning now...^&grin

The weather at the Westcoaster in always just about perfect. However, you never really need to go outside because of the room trading etc.

I remember back in 2013 when San Antonio got close to 10 inches of rain in less than a few hours on the Saturday of the show. I believe that is still a record.

In any event, the weather has no influence on me as far as attending a show. I go for the camaraderie and toy soldiers.

It's hard to beat the weather in Southern California. When we are out there, the first couple of hours in the morning are overcast and by 1030 or 11, it's just beautiful sunshine. You couldn't ask for better weather, in my opinion.
