Marx Civil War Set Up (1 Viewer)

The problem I have with one this size is if I could set it up like this I'd want to keep it up. Living floor is likely not a good option. I may need to think about a second ping-pong table.

Jay I like that you have added printed flags to the figures.

Well, the big set up is now part of history. I thought I'd share some pictures of the "Terra-forming" process as a way to close out this chapter.

I started by gathering everything I would need for the set up and spreading out the big diorama Drape on the floor.

Then I added the road and the river....

Next I took a bunch of books and Toy Soldier boxes and put them under the drape to get the feel of rolling hills for part of the set up.

And then it was a matter of setting up the troops.

I really had a blast with this set-up. Already I have more crazy ideas flitting around my brain. I wonder how many years will pass before I act on them?

Was that a customized drape or an off the shelf one?

I made this drape to be as generic as possible because I wanted it to be as versatile as possible. Usually I 'sculpt' the drapes by trimming the length of grass to different lengths and putting in some areas without grass. I might even 'carve' in a permanent road or river bed. I also usually try to add more variations of color than I did with this one. Also, when down in my basement lair, I usually add real dirt and small rocks to get a really cool ground effect. My goal when developing the whole drape system was to recreate the ability to shape the terrain of my set-ups like I did in my back yard as a kid. Since I wanted to be able to use this drape upstairs without making a mess, I restrained myself from getting 'dirty'.

Here are the last two pictures I took before tearing down the set-up.

Your photos are great. You manage to take figures that were sculpted 50 years ago, with only a couple dozen basic poses and set them up and photograph them to create a whole army! The overall "feel" of your photos brings back the fun of playing with the toy soldiers (or the long daydreams based on looking through the Sears Christmas catalog).

Your wife must be EXTREMELY tolerant to let you set up in the living room like that :)

Thanks for sharing your work - you put the "play" into playset.

I thought I was done, but I got to experimenting with a way to make better flames and explosions.

Good experiment! I thought with unpainted "toy" figures a flat cardboard "BOOM" sign would work or a photoshopped "POW." The cotton works for me.

Thanks, Gary. I really do try to recapture the old experience, except with a larger scope than I ever dreamed of as a kid. When I was a kid it was a matter of using a stolen spoon to dig rivers and caves. It was tranplanted clumps of grass for foliage. Now It's just fun to try to add the 'realism'to the old guys. This set up has just been fun.

My wife's about had it now. i think she's on strikeuntil I get everything cleaned up.
