Kurt Welter (25 February 1916 – 7 March 1949) was a German Luftwaffe fighter ace and the most successful Jet Expert of World War II.[Notes 1] A flying ace or fighter ace is a military aviator credited with shooting down five or more enemy aircraft during aerial combat.[1] He claimed a total of 63 aerial victories—that is, 63 aerial combat encounters resulting in the destruction of the enemy aircraft—achieved in only 93 combat missions. He recorded 56 victories at night, including 33 Mosquitos,[Notes 2] and scored more aerial victories from a jet fighter aircraft than anyone else in World War II and potentially in aviation history.[2][Notes 3]

Welter was born in Cologne-Lindenthal (Köln-Lindenthal) on 25 February 1916. He joined the military service of the Luftwaffe in 1934 and was trained as a pilot. He showed a strong natural ability as a pilot and was subsequently selected for flight instructor training and served many years as a flight instructor. In 1943 Welter transferred to an operational night fighter unit flying contemporary piston engine fighter aircraft. On 18 October 1944, after 40 combat missions, Welter was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross (Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes). In early 1945, Welter transferred to an experimental jet night fighter unit flying the Messerschmitt Me 262. On 11 March 1945 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves (Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes mit Eichenlaub) for 48 aerial victories. Welter survived the war and was killed in an accident at a railroad crossing on 7 March 1949.[3]

Very nice model.
I've Just got myself the 1/32 Me262 night fighter kit from Trumpeter. I can't wait to work on it but I need to finish the Stuka first which I started two weeks ago ^&grin

I had my mate build me the trumpeter kit ^&cool and have 21'st century version as well of the night fighter ^&grin

Fantastic looking model. Thank you very much for shareing this really well taken photo with us and for adding those most interesting background notes as well. I am not that much in model planes myself but this one could surely change my ignorant "habbit".
kind regards
Wolfgang

If they do Welter's 262 then they will have to stick accurately with the aircraft he flew in. Welter's aircraft are relatively well documented. I did think it would be Figarti who brought out a Night fighter variant of the 262 first so, kudos to TG for beating the only opposition in the warbirds market at the moment

Welters aircraft is sold out .I am showing colour schemes for a possible extra batch of Me262 night fighters if the demand is big enough .
guy:rolleyes:

D***, I miss the boat again :smile2: ; But my wallet will appreciate it ^&grin.
I'm going to build my 1/32 Night Fighter based on Welters' Me262 :wink2:

You have to be careful when using model kits as exemplars of real aircraft. Also one of these is the aircraft Neil placed into his post above.

All planes I showed belonged to "Kommando Welter" and were stationed at Burg and Lubeck in april 1945
