The Medal of Honor is to be awarded to Salavtore Giunta of Hiawatha, Iowa for actions in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan, on Oct.25, 2007. This marks the first MOH award to a living soldier since the war in Viet Nam. Staff Sgt. Giunta, currently in Italy, Co.B, 2nd Batt., 503 IF, 173rd Airborne Brig. Combat Team, was a Specialist at the time of his action. His Airborne squad was on patrol when ambushed. He rescued wounded team members under fire. President Obama will present the award. -- Al
