Just a question - how far can bad taste go in a signature?

Are people not offended when they read in a signature the words "Meine Ehre heißt Treue"?

This comes from a Hitler letter wherein he wrote: „… SS-Mann, deine Ehre heißt Treue!” Himmler then used it as did the whole SS in their paroles/slogans!

In Germany and in Austria, the use of this sentence is punishable.

I was stunned when I saw this here on the Forum uncommented and then am even more stunned that nobody picks this up but is offended when someone wants to use sand from the Normandy to use in a diorama!? Am I oversensitive here or what???

I didn't even know what it meant. I don't speak German, and I did not get the reference.

Ok...but the UK guy using the slogan obviously knows quite well what it means.

Maybe he can explain why he used that!

From the German to English Google translator - "My honor is loyalty"

Oh yeah, very innocent, but the deeper meaning is very bad taste!

It's like somebody putting "Arbeit macht frei" in his signature!

I agree. The motto of the SS is in bad taste. What's next? "Eine Volk, Eine Reich, Eine Fuhrer"? Bad path. -- lancer

I hope mine isn't too racially insensitive:eek:... To myself!

Maybe if the "offender" is a big "Parade" and LAH type, it might fit in
nicely, as a reminder of history, not a glorification.

With the greatest respect for the concern expressed, I would have to say this is another slippery slope and from my prospective not something that merits a great public reaction. As noted, the literal translation is certainly innocent so it is not the words themselves that are offensive. Even swastikas have many, many respectable meanings so why should not words be given the same benefit of the doubt. As the slogan for the SS, it could be offensive but even there, given how many people here collect the SS blighters, I can't see singling out this quote as a special case.

I appreciate and totally agree with anyone's repulsion for the practices and preachings of Nazi Germany but I do not think the use of these words alone on a forum that encourages collecting figures and vehicles from the units for which it was a slogan is offensive in itself. Censorship is indeed a slippery slope.

Mmmhmmm interesting thoughts but for once don't agree ;-).

For me there is a line - thin be it - between collection military figures and writing Nazi paroles at the bottom of every post he writes.

Both of my grand parents were forced into the Wehrmacht, so maybe I am a bit touchy with regards to glorifying Himmlers paroles to this level.
