Those look like really simple structures to make...really easy with no brick etching...I'm gonna make a village...

The buildings are all made from Foam Board and given a plaster filler wash. The key for me is make them small and a little rough and ready.

Looking forward to this--how about doing a step-by-step post for us:)

Randy...thank you very much for posting this picture...you have just given me all the research I need...I'm pretty sure the Durham's Water Putty will be an easy texture for the exterior...a few dowels in the roofing...with a little messy detailing to reproduce these textured exteriors...carve out a window and build a wooden door and frame...and these should be very easy to build...

Paul is famous within the wargaming community, world famous in fact. His displays have been in many wargaming magazines and featured at Salate and Historicon, the two biggest wargaming shows in the Uk and the US respetively.

His Waterloo battlefield has to be seen to be appreciated, it is spectacular. He also did a huge Spanish battlefield for 28mm Napoleonics as well.

He made a large hill with trenches on it for me as well as a wheatfield with a tree and hedgeline alongside it, a road coming across and several gun positions, it's jaw dropping.

The man has written several books on terrain making, he is THE source for top shelf wargaming displays.

Wargamers are not afraid of spending money, they shell out big bucks for professionally painted figures and scenery, not afraid to spend the money..................

Paul's tip for making zareba scrub

A very quick and inexpensive way to make your scrub for the Sudan is to use Astro Turf. You can buy it as doormats at DIY and Hardware shops and simply cut it up into small pieces, stick it onto a card base, add some scatter and small rocks around the edges and your done. It comes in the green colour shown above and I give it a brush over with a lighter green emulsion colour to tone down the plastic shine. Figures are a mix of Perry and Foundry and all painted by yours truly.
Cheers - Paul

Randy...I'm so impressed with this guys work...

there are a lot more pictures on his site for Sudan...if you don't mind...I may post them later...

I started building this structure today...nothing but the foam is done so far...

but I'm using this one as a model...

I need to do the wooden porch...which should take some time to finish...plus to frame out all the windows and doors I cut out...and texture the exterior walls...and paint...hehehe...so I've really done very little so far...but I have at least started and got some great tips today from Modwalls by phone...

he has given me a great product ideas for texturing and filling seams along with some simple techniques to get the desired "stucco" effect on the walls...

I picked one of his most difficult buildings...as the rest are simple square four sided figures...but this one looks like fun and I hope to have it finished in a week or so...

I doubt if it will look exactly like his......but it's a good model to copy...

mine is pretty big...20x12...anyway...

I'll post some more pictures as it goes along...

That looks great. I prefer the color of these to the white washed one's by Paul.

This is a very interesting thread!
Mike, what kind of foam board are you using?

Pete

This is one from the past, the legendary Peter Gilder! One of his Sudan displays for a wargames magazine.
